The subject of Swedish language at the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences is currently in a strong phase of development. The subject has the right to award degrees up to the advanced level. Teaching is provided through standalone courses, courses within teacher education programs, master's programs, and commissioned training. Currently, 10 people work in the subject on a full-time or part-time basis, including one professor. Research within the subject has particular strengths in literacy, the writing development of students and pupils, as well as subject didactics and school research.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include overall responsibility for research within the subject, own research, teaching, and supervision. The professor is expected to contribute to developing the subject's research profile and to initiate, lead, and conduct research projects, including applications for external research funding. The role also includes supervising at various levels and contributing to the development of the research environment through collegial collaboration and linking education to research. The professor is also responsible for developing the subject's role within teacher education, with a special focus on subject didactic research and education, and the higher education pedagogical initiative "Skrivlyftet" (The Writing Lift) at Mid Sweden University. Administrative duties may also occur. The appointment includes own research in accordance with the faculty board's guidelines for professors.

Qualifications

To be eligible for appointment as a professor, one must have demonstrated both scientific and pedagogical competence. Furthermore, eligibility requirements described in Mid Sweden University's employment regulations and the Faculty of Humanities' rules and instructions apply.

Eligibility as a professor requires higher education pedagogical training comprising at least 15 credit points or at least 10 weeks of full-time studies. If this is lacking, the appointed professor must achieve this within two years of the appointment date.

Other Requirements

A specific requirement for eligibility is documented scientific competence in the Swedish language or a closely related area relevant to the position. The ability to supervise students at various levels is an additional requirement. Since teaching within the subject is conducted in Swedish, the applicant is expected to have documented very good ability to teach and communicate in Swedish.

Personal Qualities

The applicant is expected to have a well-developed ability to collaborate and contribute constructively in collegial contexts, both within the department and in external research environments. The role also requires good communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to tailor messages to different target groups. Furthermore, flexibility and the ability to handle changing conditions in educational and research activities are valued. The applicant should also demonstrate a structured and responsible working style as well as professional judgment that supports long-term quality in teaching, research, and collaboration.

Assessment Criteria

As assessment criteria for the appointment of a professor, the degree of such competence that is a requirement for eligibility shall apply. Equal care is given to the assessment of pedagogical competence as scientific competence. Administrative and other relevant competence may also be weighed in.

In the assessment, weight will be placed on:

  • Research experience regarding issues concerning literacy, with a special focus on academic literacy in higher education.
  • Research experience in subject didactics regarding issues concerning reading and writing development, with relevance for teacher education.
  • Documented ability to conduct and publish research in Swedish.

Particularly meritorious for the position are:

  • Experience of leading larger research projects.
  • Experience of national and international research collaboration.
  • Ability to obtain external research funding.

Processing

Preparation of the appointment follows the forms specified in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and proceeds in accordance with Mid Sweden University's employment regulations.

Employment and Start Date

The appointment is a permanent full-time position with a start date of 2027-01-01 or by mutual agreement.
