Department of Orthopedics and Hand Surgery
We are Akademiska Sjukhuset – one of Sweden's leading university hospitals. As a county hospital and provider of highly specialized care, we serve two million people in Central Sweden. Here, something is always happening – a new life is born, a grandmother undergoes surgery, a colleague is hailed as a hero. With us, you will experience both challenging trials and fantastic events within a strong community of colleagues. See glimpses of our reality in our photo exhibition; akademiskafotoutstallning.se (https://akademiskafotoutstallning.se). We welcome your application!
Our Operations
The Department of Orthopedics and Hand Surgery offers an exciting opportunity for those interested in working in orthopedics.
At ward 70A, we primarily receive an acute influx of patients receiving pre- and postoperative care for various types of fractures, i.e., injuries resulting from trauma. Some patients may have, for example, cut their hand at work, broken a leg on a ski trip, or been involved in a high-energy traffic accident. Other patients may have suffered a hip fracture after a fall on the same level or developed an infection requiring amputation. Thus, our patient clientele varies in terms of age and underlying diseases. We also have doctors with specialist competence in complex pelvic fractures and difficult hand surgical procedures, which means we receive patients from large parts of the country.
Ward 70B receives a large part of our planned care. Here, we help patients with arthritis who need prosthetic care for the hip, knee, or shoulder joint. The acute influx consists mainly of patients with traumatic fractures of the spine and neck, large herniated discs requiring acute surgery, or patients with infections that, in addition to antibiotic treatment, require surgical intervention. We have doctors highly specialized in prosthetic and spinal surgery, which means we also provide national and regional healthcare here.
Lengths of stay vary and can range from one day to several weeks. We work in teams with professionals such as: registered nurses, assistant nurses, pharmacists, counselors, resident physicians, specialist physicians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and medical secretaries. We also have nurses with special functions, such as quality assurance nurses and education nurses, aimed at driving and developing care for our patients, as well as supporting you as a new colleague. It is important to us that you develop in your role as a nurse, and therefore we offer continuous training days and weekly lectures, as well as the opportunity to take orthopedic courses during working hours.
Your Assignment
With us, you will always receive a secure and well-structured introduction of at least 5 weeks. A personal introduction program is designed together with one of our education nurses. The introduction includes, among other things, lectures on orthopedic diseases, a course in handling pain pumps, TUB training, transfer techniques, and introductions with other professional categories to gain a holistic view of how we work on the ward.
With us, you will gain broad knowledge about the orthopedic patient as well as pre- and postoperative care. In addition to the orthopedic condition, many of our patients also have other underlying diseases that may also need treatment. This means you will also gain broad medical knowledge.
For newly graduated nurses, we offer a Clinical Development Year (KUÅ), which constitutes 20% of your working time, where you can, among other things, deepen your knowledge in certain areas.
Training sessions take place once a month together with others in the staff group. We also have continuous simulation training based on the SMART concept. For those who have worked as a nurse for two years or more, we offer a scheduled advanced training course in orthopedic diseases and diagnoses.
Your Qualifications
We are looking for a licensed registered nurse with an interest in orthopedics.
Your Competence
We value a positive work climate where all employees feel comfortable and secure. We are looking for someone with good collaboration skills who wants to work in a multiprofessional team. You lead nursing care, identify nursing needs, initiate, follow up, and prioritize your actions. Your goal is to provide the best care for your patients. We are looking for someone who is curious, proactive, flexible, and has a desire to develop. Previous experience in orthopedics and/or emergency care is an asset but not a requirement.
We Offer
We offer a permanent full-time position as a registered nurse with a start date according to agreement. We are looking for someone who wants to work days, evenings, and weekends, but also someone who wants to rotate between day and night shifts, or alternatively, someone who wants to work permanent night shifts. A probationary period may apply.
With us, you receive benefits that make a difference. Read about the benefits here: Region Uppsala Benefits (https://regionuppsala.se/jobba-hos-oss/bli-var-nya-kollega/formaner/).

Region Uppsala values the qualities that gender balance and diversity bring to the operations and welcomes applicants of all genders and with different backgrounds, functional abilities, and life experiences.
Region Uppsala places all permanent staff in the military reserve based on the needs of the total defense. This entails no obligations for the individual employee in peacetime but is solely a planning measure.
Before a decision on employment is made, a check of the suspicion and criminal record registers is carried out for all job applicants who, in the sought employment, may come to work within psychiatric care, habilitation, care of children and youth, or compulsory care of substance abusers, areas covered by optional register extracts. This thus applies to all who will work close to patients, even if the current tasks are not intended to mainly include work with the above-mentioned patient groups.
This recruitment is carried out entirely by Region Uppsala, and we decline telephone calls from recruitment companies and ad salespeople.
