Sweden's most beautiful workplace is seeking a
SAR Coordinator for Maritime and Air Search and Rescue Operations
based in Gothenburg
In the event of maritime and aviation accidents, the Swedish Maritime Administration (Sjöfartsverket), through its Search and Rescue (SAR) Division, is responsible for rescue services in close collaboration with several other actors. The cooperation involves parties such as the Maritime Administration's pilot stations, Helicopter Unit, and Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC), the Swedish Society for Sea Rescue (SSRS), the Coast Guard (KBV), the Swedish Armed Forces, municipal rescue services, regions, the police, and others.
The position of SAR Coordinator for maritime and air search and rescue operations will be part of the SAR Strategic Steering unit, which handles assignments related to the prerequisites of the SAR system and various cooperation tasks. The unit consists of eight employees and a few seconded from other parts of the department, four of whom work with regional coordination. We are now recruiting two SAR Coordinators stationed in different locations in Sweden; this advertisement is for the position based in Gothenburg.
Responsibilities
As a SAR Coordinator, you are responsible for coordinating maritime and air rescue services within an assigned geographical area based on an established operational plan and budget. The position reports directly to the Head of SAR Strategic Steering. The assignment includes acting as a regional contact person for various cooperation partners. You will plan and lead regional consultation meetings and exercises, as well as participate in and represent the unit at various meetings, seminars, and forums concerning search and rescue services. You are responsible for evaluating completed search and rescue operations and handling media contacts regarding preventive work within the regional area, in collaboration with the Maritime Administration's communications department.
The role also includes supporting the training activities of the Search and Rescue division together with other colleagues. You will work as an instructor and lecturer at SAR training courses, which include serving as a commander on board surface rescue units. You will contribute to the planning of the training and the work to further develop the course content.
The position also includes responsibility for civil defense work at the regional level. This means that, within the framework of the Maritime Administration's SAR mandate, you will participate in planning, coordination, and collaboration with relevant authorities and actors, as well as contribute to regional forums and exercises related to total defense.
Other assignments may arise, such as contributing to the unit's work on handling inquiries, conducting investigations and projects, and planning national and international exercises.
Who are you?
We are looking for someone with post-secondary education in maritime affairs, aviation, rescue services, or defense, and/or equivalent knowledge and professional experience deemed relevant for the position. You must have good verbal and written communication skills in Swedish and English and be proficient with the Office software suite. A manual transmission car license (Class B) is required for the position. Experience working with tasks related to the crisis management system within the rescue service, public sector, and/or municipal sector, as well as civil defense work, is an asset. Experience in coordination assignments, evaluation, and participation in rescue operations is also meritorious. It is also an asset if you hold a Class VIII Ship's Officer certificate and a Class VIII Engine Officer certificate.
We will place great emphasis on your personal qualities. Since the assignment involves many contacts, both internal and external, it is important that you are responsive, able to build trusting relationships, and capable of being a good representative for the organization. You have a good ability to plan and work independently based on set goals, both at the operational and strategic levels. You possess strong leadership skills with clear integrity; you are proactive, solution-oriented, and maintain a positive attitude in your work. The assignments require good administrative and organizational skills.
For the instructor assignment, it is important that you enjoy teaching and are a good pedagogue. You must have the ability to identify the needs of course participants and apply humble leadership.
How and when?
This recruitment is for a permanent position expected to be filled in the spring. Working hours are Monday to Friday, arranged in consultation with the responsible manager; some evening work may occur in connection with, for example, participation in training and exercises. The assignments include many travel days as regional presence is important, and training is conducted on Arkö in the Östergötland archipelago and in Gothenburg.
Interviews will be conducted in mid-April.
The Swedish Maritime Administration may apply a six-month probationary period.
The position may involve wartime placement at the Swedish Maritime Administration.
The position may require Swedish citizenship. Security clearance with a background check may be conducted before a job offer is made.
