Diaconal work, encounters with different languages and cultures, and the contributions of volunteer staff are essential to our activities. We are seeking a Sign Language Diaconal Assistant to work alongside employees and volunteers to foster participation and engagement.

Responsibilities

In this important role, you will:

• Lead and participate in church services
• Develop and drive activities in Swedish Sign Language
• Meet people at various stages of life – in both joy and sorrow

You will also coordinate and develop activities within the Sami church life. Approximately half of your working time will be dedicated to activities targeting hearing audiences. Communication is a central part of the assignment, where you contribute both internally and externally – not least via social media – with an inclusive and pedagogical approach.

About You

We are looking for someone who has:

• Knowledge of Swedish Sign Language
• Experience working with Deaf culture
• Experience working with minority groups
• Class B driver's license
• Good command of Swedish, both spoken and written

• Post-secondary education deemed relevant by the employer
• Experience in parish work
• Education in Sami church life
• Language skills beyond Swedish and English
• Experience leading and coordinating volunteers and collaborating with civil society actors
• Experience using social media and digital tools to reach different target audiences
• Experience working with youth at risk
• Experience facilitating conversations and workshops

To thrive in this role, you should be empathetic and attentive. You must have the ability to set boundaries and meet people in situations of vulnerability, conflict, and change. You possess a holistic perspective, work with long-term goals, and can translate visions into concrete actions. You are communicative, collaborative, and confident working both independently and as part of a team. The role requires the ability to switch between strategic and operational work, strong organizational skills, technical competence, and a diaconal mindset.

Terms

The Church of Sweden in Umeå consists of six parishes collaborating within the Umeå Pastorate. The pastorate includes an office with shared property and cemetery management, administration, booking services, HR functions, and a communications unit. There is also a shared Diaconal Center.
