Business Developer at the National Archives of Sweden

Do you want to help democratize our cultural heritage through co-creation and AI innovation? We are looking for a business developer in Stockholm or Gothenburg who wants to lead the National Archives' initiative on citizen research to promote participation and user-driven development of our digital archives.

About the Role

The National Archives is now ramping up its work with AI and digitization. As a business developer focused on citizen research, you will play a strategically important role in mobilizing public engagement to make our archives searchable. By promoting co-creation and participation, you contribute to increased use of the archives and enhanced knowledge development in broad societal issues.

You will belong to the department for Research and Knowledge Development and be part of the Research and Development (R&D) function where your task is to engage researchers, civil society, and citizens. By harnessing the public's expertise in transcription and data enrichment, we will together create the training data needed for the next generation of AI models. At the same time, you will work to strengthen open access to and trust in archives as a source throughout society.

Your Main Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Networking: Identify and initiate collaborations with universities, civil society organizations, associations (e.g., genealogy movements), and platforms like Wikimedia.
  • Project Management of Crowdsourcing: Plan and drive projects where external users contribute to transcribing and structuring archival material, focusing on older archives, 20th-century archives, and modern datasets.
  • Pedagogy and Training: Develop and implement training initiatives, both internally for colleagues and externally for citizen researchers, on how our digital resources can be used and enriched.
  • Needs Analysis: Analyze user needs and ensure that the tools we develop for co-creation are user-friendly and motivating.
  • Communication: Act as an ambassador for the National Archives and inspiringly communicate about our archives and the opportunities with open data.

Who Are You?

We are looking for an outgoing and pedagogical person driven by the democratization of cultural heritage. You have a good understanding of how technological development (AI) and human expertise (citizen research) can reinforce each other.

We are looking for someone who:

  • Is an experienced project manager: You have documented experience leading co-creation processes, crowdsourcing, or similar projects where external participants contribute to the organization's goals.
  • Is proactive and outreach-oriented: You do not wait for partners to come to you, but actively identify opportunities and build relationships.
  • Is a skilled educator: You can explain complex connections between archival material and modern technology in a way that engages a broad public.

Your Qualifications:

  • Academic degree in archival science, library and information science, humanities, social sciences, or another relevant field.
  • Several years of experience in business development focusing on digital participation or co-creation processes.
  • Excellent ability to express yourself verbally and in writing in Swedish and English.

Meritorious:

  • Experience working in archives, libraries, museums, or academia.
  • Knowledge of open data and open science.
  • Have a network of contacts within the archival sector and/or civil society organizations.
  • Basic understanding of how AI models (e.g., HTR or language models) work and what is required for training data.
  • Experience working with legal aspects of data sharing and copyright (in collaboration with lawyers).

Employment Conditions

  • Employment type: Permanent
  • Working hours: Full-time
  • Workplace: Stockholm or Gothenburg
  • Start date: As soon as possible or by agreement
  • Application deadline: 2026-04-13

The National Archives applies individual salary setting and a 6-month probationary period.

Citizenship and Security Clearance:

You must be a Swedish citizen as the position is classified. We will therefore conduct a security clearance with a background check according to the Security Protection Act (2018:585).
