Educator at the Vasa Museum
The National Museums of Maritime, Transport and Defence History work with cultural heritage with the vision of broadening people's worldview through knowledge, experiences, and engagement.
The authority has a well-integrated sustainability effort and also aims to inspire others to act for a sustainable future. We are a museum authority that operates and develops the Maritime Museum, the Museum of Maritime History, the Vasa Museum, Wreck – Museum of Wrecks, and the Railway Museum. Since January 1, 2026, the Army Museum and the Air Force Museum will also be part of the authority.
We have an exciting development ahead as the authority grows in 2026. We will continue to develop a culture and working methods where people and ideas have room to grow while building a common culture with shared working methods in a new organizational structure within a larger authority. We are developing an effective collaborative culture characterized by trust, curiosity, and accountability. A culture where we get better together!
About the Position
The Vasa Museum displays the Vasa, the world's only salvaged and restored ship from the 17th century. Each year, we welcome approximately 1.4 million visitors, making us the world's most visited maritime museum. The Vasa Museum is one of seven museums under the National Museums of Maritime, Transport and Defence History. The Vasa Museum consists of two public units. The public unit is responsible for bookings, event activities, shop, entrance, and exhibition activities.
The program and education unit is responsible for program activities for adults and children, educational activities for schools, training, and collaborations with civil society. In addition, the unit is responsible for the production of digital experiences both in the museum and online.
The Vasa Museum's units have close cooperation with other units within the authority SMMTF, such as the collections unit, research activities, and the communications unit.
We offer a wide range of programs and educational formats for children, youth, and adults. We are now looking for someone who wants to help further develop our school programs and educational methods, with a particular focus on integrating STEM subjects into our activities. Supporting Vasa – one of the authority's prioritized and long-term preservation projects – as well as the borrowed exhibition James Cameron – Challenging the Deep and the collaboration with the steel company Alleima creates new opportunities to deepen the scientific and technical content of our pedagogy.
As an educator, you will be responsible for initiating, planning, implementing, evaluating, and developing school programs for all levels. You will participate in the development of digital school programs and contribute to exhibition productions with particular responsibility for pedagogy. Together with colleagues and external actors, you will develop methods and formats that make the Vasa Museum's content relevant and accessible to new target groups.
Your Skills and Experience
Requirements:
- Teacher training or other formal educational training in social studies and natural sciences.
- Several years of experience working as a museum educator.
- Experience working in both schools and museums.
Desirable:
- University education in humanities subjects, such as history, archaeology, art history, or intellectual history.
- Experience working as a teacher.
Your Qualities
We place great importance on personal qualities. We are looking for someone with broad educational competence who sees the value of combining scientific and technical perspectives with humanities and social sciences. You are proactive, take significant personal responsibility, and thrive in a role where you can drive development together with others.
You work systematically throughout the process – initiating, planning, implementing, evaluating, and developing – and have the ability to adapt content and formats to different target groups. As a person, you are collaborative, attentive, and creative, with a genuine interest in making cultural heritage relevant and engaging.
