Junior System Administrator

This is the role for you who want to build a solid foundation in IT infrastructure while working in an exciting environment where things are happening. With us, you will be part of a competent team that learns from each other, where you will develop and contribute to SMHI's server and virtualization environments.

About the IT Department

SMHI's IT department in Norrköping consists of approximately 110 employees who work in the entire chain from idea to operation within applications and infrastructure. Our operations are broad and complex, which places high demands on the support IT provides. The role is part of the IT production unit, and you will be involved in developing and operating the platforms that form the foundation for our data centers and our communication – from physical and virtualized infrastructure to segmentation, security, and automated operations.

About the Role

SMHI is on an exciting journey where we are modernizing and developing our IT infrastructure for the future. As a junior system administrator, you will be part of this initiative and help keep our IT environments stable, secure, and ready for new needs. The role is technically oriented and closely related to the operational management and development of our infrastructure.

You will work closely with experienced colleagues in a team responsible for the infrastructure that is the foundation of SMHI's data centers and communication – from physical and virtualized server environments to automation, monitoring, and basic security. The role is suitable for you who are at the beginning of your career and want to build a solid foundation in IT operations and infrastructure while developing step by step.

In your daily work, you will participate in the daily operations and gradually take on more responsibility for SMHI's server and virtualization environments. You will participate in improving existing solutions and help implement new ones, focusing on stability, security, and long-term sustainability.

We actively work on modernizing, automating, and containerizing our infrastructure. The work is done in close collaboration with other system administrators, operations technicians, IT architects, and security specialists. You will also serve as technical support in evaluating new solutions and participate in internal initiatives related to standards, security, and automation.

Technical Environments You Will Work In:

  • Server and network virtualization: VMware vSphere, NSX
  • Containers and orchestration: Kubernetes, Podman/Docker, Tanzu Kubernetes
  • Operating systems: VMware ESXi, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Photon OS
  • Automation and scripting: Ansible, AWX, Bash, Python, PowerShell
  • Version control: GitLab
  • Monitoring and log management: Grafana, OP5 Monitor, vRealize Operations, Prometheus
  • Hardware: Cisco UCS

About You

We are now looking for someone who is at the beginning of their IT career and wants the opportunity to both contribute and develop in their role. You have a post-secondary education that is relevant to the assignment, for example in IT infrastructure or DevOps. You have a good ability to express yourself well in both spoken and written Swedish and English. We consider it a strong merit if you have experience with both Linux and Windows environments, virtualization platforms (e.g., VMware, Proxmox, KVM), container technology and associated platforms (Docker, Podman, Kubernetes), or experience with GitOps, infrastructure as code (IaC), and API integrations.

We consider it a merit if you have experience from studies or work in:

  • Virtualized data center and hybrid environments.
  • Networking, storage, server hardware, or other technical areas within IT infrastructure.
  • AWX, Terraform/OpenTofu, Bash, Python, PowerShell, or Ansible.
  • Certifications in Cisco, VMware, Linux, or Kubernetes.
  • A agile methods or DevOps teams.
  • Public sector, preferably with high demands for availability and security.

Your personal qualities and abilities are crucial for succeeding and thriving with us. We are looking for someone who is curious and analytical, and who enjoys understanding how things work. You thrive on troubleshooting and solving technical problems, often together with others – even when the solution is new to you. You work in a structured manner, take responsibility for your tasks, and want to gradually build a comprehensive understanding of the IT environment.

You are also collaborative and attentive, contributing to a positive team spirit in everyday life. You can explain technical issues clearly and adapt your communication to the recipient, and you are prepared to document your work. Above all, you have a strong interest in IT and infrastructure, and are driven to learn more and develop in the role – with support from experienced colleagues and the organization.
