Postdoctoral Researcher in Computational Biology at Uppsala University

The Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University has a broad research profile with strong research groups focused on cancer, genetic and autoimmune diseases. One of the core ideas at the department is to stimulate translational research and thereby promote closer collaboration between medical research and healthcare. Research is conducted within six research programs: cancer precision medicine, cancer immunotherapy, genomics and neurobiology, molecular tools and functional genomics, neuro-oncology and neurodegeneration, and vascular biology. Parts of the activities are also integrated with the departments of oncology, clinical genetics, clinical immunology, clinical pathology, and hospital physics at Uppsala University Hospital. The department has teaching assignments in several program education, independent courses, and international master's programs within the medical faculty. The department has a turnover of approximately 550 million SEK, of which about two-thirds are external research grants. The number of employees is about 400, of which about 100 are doctoral students, and there are a total of over 850 active in the workforce. Job Description

A postdoctoral position is available in Veronica Rendo's research group at the Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University. We are looking for a highly motivated candidate interested in studying malignant brain tumors, who can contribute to projects focused on elucidating mechanisms behind treatment responses and resistance related to standard treatments and clinically relevant targeted therapies within this disease. Read more about the research group here: http://rendolab.org/ (http://rendolab.org/)

The postdoctoral researcher will conduct computational analyses to investigate tumor development and treatment resistance in tumor samples and cell lines from adult and pediatric patients with brain tumors. These include single-cell RNA, ATAC, and multi-omics sequencing data, along with datasets generated from cellular barcoding methods, epigenetic profiling methods (e.g., CUT&RUN), and genome-wide CRISPR screenings. In collaboration with neuro-oncological research groups in Europe and the USA, the postdoctoral researcher will also implement predictive modeling methods to map transcriptional and epigenetic features that characterize tumor cells developing treatment resistance. The selected candidate is expected to work in a highly collaborative environment and present the project's results at scientific meetings and conferences.

Qualifications

  • The applicant must have a PhD in computational biology, bioinformatics, computer science, machine learning, molecular medicine, or equivalent, or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a PhD in the same field. The degree must be completed by the time the hiring decision is made. Primarily, candidates who have completed their degree within the last three years will be considered. When calculating the three-year timeframe, the deadline for applications is the starting point. If there are special reasons, such a degree may have been obtained earlier. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, or union duties.
  • Experience in programming in R or Python, statistics, and handling large datasets.
  • Experience in data analysis and visualization.
  • Experience in analyzing bulk and single-cell RNA and ATAC-seq data.
  • Good experience in processing and analyzing large bioinformatics datasets in a Linux/UNIX environment, including the use of high-performance computing (HPC). The candidate should also be familiar with version control systems such as Git.
  • Good oral and written skills in English.

Desirable/meritorious

Experience working with bulk and single-cell datasets from cancer samples, particularly brain tumors, is highly meritorious.
