Meteorological Institution at Stockholm University (MISU)
The Meteorological Institution at Stockholm University (MISU) conducts research and education that spans the atmosphere, ocean, and physically based climate science.
We offer educational programs at the undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels. Our research seeks answers to fundamental questions about the dynamic, physical, chemical, and biogeochemical properties of the atmosphere and oceans that are relevant to weather and climate. The research activities are broad and include processes ranging from the deep sea to the upper atmosphere, and from the tropics to the poles. We utilize and develop theory, statistical methods, and numerical models in close interplay with observations. Additionally, the institution develops and leads observation-based research supported by satellites, Arctic icebreaker expeditions, and land-based instruments.
MISU is part of a larger research environment at the university, encompassing Bolin Center for Climate Research (https://www.su.se/enheter/bolincentret-for-klimatforskning), Stockholm University Baltic Sea Centre (https://www.su.se/enheter/stockholms-universitets-ostersjocentrum), and e-science.se (https://e-science.se/). The institution is an international workplace, with over half of the staff having a background outside Sweden. More information about us can be found at Meteorological Institution (https://www.su.se/department-of-meteorology/).
Job Responsibilities
We are looking for someone who wants to work in a vital, international academic environment, providing advanced user support for computation-heavy climate research at the national level, combined with research-related IT support.
Within the Bolin Center, climate research is conducted with great breadth. A significant part of the research is computation-heavy and relies on the National Academic Infrastructure for Supercomputers in Sweden (NAISS (https://www.naiss.se/om-oss/)). The Bolin Center also coordinates the national advanced user support for climate modeling within NAISS. Modeling occurs on scales from LES to global models, from paleoclimate simulations to future projections, and using traditional methods as well as AI and machine learning.
We are seeking a person whose expertise strengthens and/or complements the group of application experts we currently have within the Bolin Center, for example, through skills and experience in global or regional climate modeling, high-resolution modeling, ocean or ice modeling, data analysis, or machine learning.
User support within the Bolin Center constitutes 50% of the position and involves advanced support to researchers related to computational resources, models, and data management. The remaining part of the position entails responsibility for the IT environment of the Meteorological Institution.
In the role of IT Manager, you will be responsible for purchasing, installation, configuration, and operation of operating systems and research software in Linux, macOS, and Windows environments. You will be responsible for ongoing system updates, patching, logging, and access management on servers and AV equipment, as well as working with IT security and incident management in close collaboration with Stockholm University's central IT security function.
An important part of the job is providing research-related IT support to researchers and PhD students, for example, regarding software, data management, server and storage solutions, and large format printing.
Qualifications
You should have a PhD in a relevant field and good subject knowledge and HPC experience. You should have a good ability to communicate with users, assist research projects within your domain, and generally support both students and established researchers in broader HPC issues related to data management and hardware, and have an interest in following and conveying relevant developments in HPC, together with the Bolin Center's modeling coordinators and other application experts.
Furthermore, you need good technical skills in Linux, macOS, and Windows, as well as knowledge of networks, system administration, data security, and troubleshooting across multiple platforms. Good knowledge of Swedish and very good knowledge of English is a requirement.
As a person, you are self-driven and have a structured and orderly working method. You thrive in a role where you both independently and together with colleagues drive the work forward and contribute to development through a proactive and listening approach.
In the recruitment process, we will place great emphasis on your personal qualities. Therefore, we encourage you to apply even if you do not meet all the qualifications.
About the Employment
The position is full-time and is limited to twelve months. This is a newly established position, and provided it functions well during the first year, we intend to announce a permanent position. Stockholm University applies individual salary setting. Start date as soon as possible.
We Offer
As an employee at MISU, you will have the opportunity to both develop and be developed, together with colleagues in an engaged and collaborative working environment. You will work in an international research environment, receive favorable conditions, and have a good working environment. The institution is located on the Frescati campus in the National City Park with good connections to the city. Possibility for remote work is offered after the introductory period.
Stockholm University is committed to being a workplace that is free from discrimination and provides equal rights and opportunities for all.
