Job Advertisement: Ammunition Safety

FOI, the Total Defence Research Institute, is one of Europe’s leading institutes for applied research in defence and security. FOI is an authority under the Ministry of Defence, tasked with conducting research, method and technology development, and investigations to support total defence, disarmament, non-proliferation, and international security. Our operations are primarily commissioned by the Government Offices, the Armed Forces, the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), and the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB). At FOI, we have about 1400 employees, of which over 1000 work directly with research and development. Our competencies span the entire field from natural sciences and technology to social and political sciences.

How can ammunition be safe?

Ammunition must be safe for long-term storage, transport, and handling in the field, but it must also function as intended at the end of its use. Are you interested in working practically with ammunition safety? Then FOI could be your new workplace! We offer a balanced work life, a developing work environment, and a socially important job!

About the position

Ammunition safety involves lifespan studies with sampling controls and functional testing of various types of ammunition. During sampling controls, you will, among other things, disassemble rocket motors and missiles to take samples of propellant that are then analyzed in our chemical laboratory. Furthermore, you will conduct accelerated aging of rocket motors, followed by functional testing of both rocket motors and other pyrotechnic components. You may participate in large-scale field trials both at the Grindsjön shooting range and at other locations in the country, as well as abroad. Various methods will be used to collect measurement data in our analyses, which will then be used in reporting to the client.

The work is project-based and reported both in writing and orally. We place high demands on traceability, accuracy, and the ability to document.

About the department

The department's activities contribute to creating and strengthening national expertise in explosives, weapon effects, and protection. Our work spans several technical areas and includes experiments, calculations, and evaluations of complex weapon and protection systems. We strive to create a work environment where everyone, regardless of background, feels welcome and can contribute with their perspectives and ideas.

FOI has four locations: Stockholm-Kista, Stockholm-Grindsjön, Umeå, and Linköping. You will be part of one of the research units in the Weapons, Protection, and Safety department located in Stockholm-Grindsjön. The scenic Grindsjön is located in Södertörn, about 40 km south of Stockholm. There are SL bus connections with Tumba, Västerhaninge, and Ösmo/Nynäshamn.

Please read more here about what we do in the department: Weapons, protection, and safety.
