PhD Student in Science Education

We are looking for a PhD student in science education within the national graduate school for science and technology education (FontD).

In the field of science education, the relationship between specific subject content and how it is communicated in different environments is examined, as well as how individuals and groups develop and use knowledge in these environments.

Furthermore, the research includes studies of teaching processes and how participants develop different attitudes towards STEM subjects.

The PhD position will focus on science and technology education (STEM) and digital learning environments within the STEM field. Depending on the applicant's prior knowledge, the PhD student will be admitted to the graduate program in Informatics/Digital Learning at Halmstad University or in Science and Technology Education at Linköping University. Applications related to interdisciplinary issues in education connected to digitalization, AI, and STEM are welcome, but science/technology must be in the foreground.

Content and Responsibilities

The position is temporary for four years full-time, and the PhD student will primarily focus on their own doctoral education. However, a PhD student may, to a limited extent, work with teaching, other research, or artistic research and administration, but not more than 20 percent of full working time (Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5 Section 2). As a result, the employment period may be extended to a maximum of five years. The first employment may last for a maximum of one year and will then be extended one year at a time, provided that the doctoral studies progress satisfactorily.

Eligibility

Eligible for employment as a PhD student is one who is admitted or has already been admitted to a doctoral program at a university (Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5 Section 3).

To be admitted to doctoral education, the applicant must have basic eligibility and the specific eligibility required by the subject, as well as be assessed to have the ability otherwise needed to benefit from the education.

Basic Eligibility

  • has completed a degree at the advanced level
  • has completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level, or has acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way within or outside the country

Specific Eligibility

  • For eligibility to be admitted as a student to doctoral education in Informatics Digital Learning at Halmstad University, the student must have completed a degree at the advanced level (or completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level) in Informatics, Information Systems, Interaction Design, Computer Science, Educational Science, or another area deemed relevant for the doctoral subject.
  • For eligibility to be admitted as a student to doctoral education in Science and Technology Education at Linköping University, a teacher's degree is required, with courses corresponding to 30 higher education credits in a subject relevant to the field of science and/or technology education research, including a thesis of at least 15 credits at the advanced level.
  • At least 90 higher education credits in a subject relevant to the field of science and/or technology education research, including a thesis of at least 15 credits at the advanced level.
  • Furthermore, the applicant should have good language proficiency in English, both spoken and written.

Experience in the teaching profession as well as higher education credits in scientific subjects and subject didactics are meritorious.

Selection Criteria

When assessing eligible candidates, the applicant's ability to benefit from the education will be evaluated. Consideration will be given to the applicant's independence, ability to collaborate, planning, and ability to complete previous work; the applicant's ability to formulate research questions and problem areas, both in previous work and in the research plan for the planned dissertation project; degree of methodological and scientific maturity in previously conducted work, as well as in the research plan, and ability to communicate, both in writing and orally. The relevance of the planned research direction in relation to the graduate school's prioritized areas will also be assessed.

A statement of purpose of a maximum of four A4 pages should be attached to the application. The statement should include a reflection on the problem area and questions that the applicant considers interesting and relevant to research in relation to the graduate school's focus.
