Crematory Assistant Wanted at the Church of Sweden in Umeå

About the Workplace

The Church of Sweden in Umeå consists of six parishes and a cemetery administration. The cemetery administration is responsible for the cemeteries and burial services for everyone living in Umeå and Tavelsjö, regardless of worldview or membership in the Church of Sweden.

The cemetery administration consists of 26 full-time employees and about 80 seasonal employees. The operations include tasks such as grave administration, care and management of facilities, mediation and service to the public, as well as crematorium.

The crematorium in Umeå is located at Norra kyrkogården, Sandbacka. Here, over 1000 coffins are cremated each year, and the trend is that the number of cremations is increasing. The crematorium has a relatively large catchment area and cremated on behalf of surrounding parishes and most of southern Lapland. The crematorium was put into operation in 1952, and work is currently underway to ensure the necessary capacity going forward.

About the Position

As a crematory assistant, you will become an important part of work characterized by professionalism, respect, and compassion. In this role, you contribute to creating a dignified farewell for the deceased and their relatives by ensuring that each step in the process is carried out with care and integrity.

The work is varied and stimulating. It involves meetings with people in vulnerable situations as well as some administrative tasks such as booking systems, Office package, and Teams. Work in the crematorium can be physically demanding and involves both independent work and teamwork.

Main Responsibilities

• To perform cremations and handle administration directly related to the operations.
• Contact with relatives, funeral homes, and other visitors.
• Together with the team, perform registration and transport of coffins and urns, urn burial, financial administration, and logistics tasks.
• To some extent, assist with funeral ceremonies and cemetery work.

You will be offered relevant internal training necessary to carry out the tasks safely and correctly. Additionally, you will be part of a team with extensive experience and competence, who will teach you the work on-site.

About You

You who are applying have at least a high school education and a B driver's license. You have at least three years of work experience, preferably where you have met people in difficult life situations. You should have basic IT skills and some experience with administrative work. A requirement is also good knowledge of Swedish, both spoken and written, as well as a basic ability to communicate orally in English.

It is advantageous if you have a crematory technical or technical education, or equivalent documented experience. Experience in funeral and/or cemetery operations, experience in boiler maintenance, and forklift certification are also advantageous but are not required for the position.
