ML Engineer at the National Archives AI Lab

The National Archives has a special responsibility for the state archive operations and for archive preservation in the country. We oversee public archive operations and have a national overview of archive issues. We receive archives from state authorities and archives from other types of organizations. We ensure the long-term information supply of society and guarantee content, context, and authenticity. We focus on users' needs when we describe and care for the archives, when we make them accessible, and when we regulate how they should be handled.

You will be part of the National Archives AI lab and primarily work on developing models to extract text and numbers from scanned documents or maps. Furthermore, you will participate in the work of producing training data from raw data, testing and evaluating new models and architectures, and documenting and publishing training data and models. As an ML engineer in a small team, you will be expected to and have the opportunity to participate broadly in the unit's tasks.

The context of your work is often the National Archives' participation in research infrastructures and projects or the development of the National Archive Database and its services for making archive content accessible.

About You

Education

You have relevant education from university, such as a Master's degree in computer science or computer engineering, or equivalent acquired and documented competence.

Desirable

You also have education in IT/cybersecurity.

Experience

You have at least 3 years of professional experience as an ML engineer or in similar roles.

As part of your application, we would like you to submit work samples that demonstrate your skills and potential. Our evaluation of your work samples will be one of our selection criteria. Please submit the work samples as links to where we can find them or as an appendix to your cover letter.

Knowledge Requirements

  • You have a good theoretical understanding of AI and ML.
  • You have good knowledge of and experience with building and using Linux and Kubernetes-based environments and infrastructures.
  • You have experience in building and maintaining data flows, from raw data to structured datasets. You can design processes that ensure data quality and traceability throughout the chain.
  • Experience with MLOps in practice: deployment, logging, monitoring, and troubleshooting. You are comfortable moving between infrastructure, pipelines, and model code.
  • You have good knowledge of Python and have worked with frameworks such as PyTorch.
  • You have good spoken and written knowledge of Swedish and English and can communicate technical concepts in the AI/ML field to non-specialists.

Desirable

  • Experience in building CI/CD pipelines that automate training, testing, and deployment. You have experience with GitOps and see version control of data and models as natural as for code.
  • Experience in model development and understanding of how training can be scaled across multiple GPUs or nodes.
  • Experience in developing ML solutions in regulated environments, where requirements for data security, traceability, and handling of sensitive data are central. You are used to translating security requirements into functioning technical solutions.

About the National Archives AI Lab

The National Archives invests in artificial intelligence (AI) to make our historical archives more accessible and streamline our processing. Through AI, large amounts of documents can be analyzed faster and more efficiently. This provides both researchers and the public with a unique opportunity to explore the contents of the archives in new ways. To drive this development, the National Archives has created the AI lab and data services unit. The unit employs Business Developers, Data Scientists, ML Engineers, and Research Engineers.
