Job Advertisement: Customs Officer in External Control Group

The Control Department has a broad mandate to ensure that only approved goods pass the border. The mission involves conducting customs controls on imports and exports where the Customs Authority looks for goods that violate restrictions and ensures that the correct customs duties and taxes are collected. Controls are also conducted within the country after the goods have passed the border. The Control Department works with the entire chain from intelligence, control, arrest, and investigation. The operational work of the Control Department is carried out in groups that work with the entire mission of the Customs Authority.

About the Position

As a customs officer in the external control group, you will primarily work with conducting checks on goods in the flow of cargo and travelers to and from Sweden. This may involve searching containers, ships, vehicles, luggage, warehouses, and terminals to find goods that are not approved for import or export from Sweden. Examples of such goods include narcotics, pharmaceuticals, weapons, and restricted goods that do not meet EU requirements, such as dangerous toys and electronics. The work may also involve administrative tasks where you check customs declarations to ensure that the correct fees are paid and that import and export restrictions are followed. The position also involves making decisions about coercive measures, which may include arresting/detaining individuals, reporting crimes, and conducting interrogations.

As a customs officer, you will work in uniform and armed, making various forms of administrative decisions and interacting daily with the public and customers. We place great importance on your ability to treat people with respect and understanding, that you have good judgment, and that you are a good representative of the Customs Authority both internally and externally.

You must have the ability to handle situations that are mentally and physically demanding, e.g., you may need to work in dirty environments, confined spaces, and often outdoors in all types of weather. You need to have good physical conditions to undergo self-defense training, and you will receive training in handling OC spray and batons. During the basic training, you will also be trained in service pistols. Furthermore, you need to be a very experienced driver to pass the Customs Authority's driving training. The work involves shift work, so you need to be comfortable with irregular working hours.

We are looking for someone who has:

• High school education with at least passing grades in Mathematics, Social Studies, Swedish, and English
• At least four years of work experience
• Good ability to communicate and express yourself well in spoken and written Swedish and English
• Swedish driving license, class B for passenger cars, and very good driving experience
• Normal color vision
• The job requires good physical condition and health as working hours can be irregular and the work and training are physically demanding
• Ability to swim, 200 meters breaststroke

It is an advantage if you have:

• Experience in taking responsibility and/or leading others – this can be within work, community life, sports, or other contexts where you have had a leadership role
• Experience from roles where you have had a lot of contact with people and needed to adapt your approach and communication
• Ability to communicate fluently in spoken languages other than Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, and English as assessed relevant by the employer

The work is done in groups, which requires you to have strong social skills and good teamwork ability. You are self-assured, responsible, service-oriented, have integrity, and can work independently within given frameworks and dare to take your own initiatives. As a person, you are stable, handle pressure well, and maintain composure even in stressful situations. Other important qualities are that you are legally aware, have the ability to comply with laws and regulations, and have good judgment. You have a flexible attitude and can quickly adapt to changing conditions.

Education and Employment

The employment start date is September 21, 2026. You will begin your employment as a customs trainee with a basic training program divided into theory and practice, totaling approximately 16 months. About 100 training days during the theory part will be held with attendance in Malmö. The theory part alternates with practical elements and distance self-study, which places high demands on you to take responsibility for your studies. The practical part is carried out at the stationing location. The starting salary during the training period is 25,800 SEK. After successful completion of the basic training, the trainee position will end and transition to a permanent position with a salary of at least 31,000 SEK.
