The Swedish Prison and Probation Service is Growing – We are Building New Facilities and Seeking More Employees

Our primary goal is to reduce recidivism – to break the vicious cycle. If we succeed, society becomes safer for everyone. We are the authority responsible for prisons, probation, detention centers, and client transports.

The prison and detention center are located three kilometers outside the center of Ystad.

The operational area (VO) Ystad currently consists of a prison with capacity for 77 women and a detention center for men with 113 places. The focus is on release preparation efforts where individual plans form the basis for our client-centered work.

The detention center is a so-called community detention center (the detainees can be together without restrictions). In the detention center, there are those suspected of crimes awaiting investigation.

Currently, we have about 250 employees distributed across several professional groups and competencies.

The entire workplace is characterized by a high level of security awareness. A high level of security is necessary for the Swedish Prison and Probation Service to meet the requirement to protect society, provide good care, and influence our inmates towards a life without crime.

There is parking for staff near the workplace. Training opportunities are available in our staff gym, and you can purchase lunch from our own kitchen.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

As a correctional officer, you can contribute to a safer society. You work in teams with other professional groups and have the opportunity to help people break the vicious cycle and motivate them not to reoffend. It is important that you share the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's fundamental values of a humane view of humanity, respect for the individual, and belief in the potential for human development and change.

When you apply for a job as a correctional officer, you will work in a detention center or prison. Working in a detention center means focusing on care and security, and it is a job with clear routines. This places special demands on you as a correctional officer. Working in a prison is varied: care, surveillance, search, and security work are mixed with release planning and conversation and motivation work.

QUALIFICATIONS

Your personal qualities are important. As a correctional officer, you need to be secure, stable, have good self-awareness, sound judgment, and integrity. Together with your colleagues, you drive the operations, so you need to have good teamwork skills and be clear in your communication. You should be able to act physically when required.

We are looking for someone who has:

• Work experience, including seasonal work, temporary employment, or self-employment. Internships and volunteer work are not considered equivalent to employment
• High school diploma (read more via the link under other)
• Good knowledge of the Swedish language in both speech and writing
• Good computer skills
• Driving license B

It is an advantage if you have:

• Work experience from correctional services, security work, social care, psychiatry, or health and care work
• Knowledge in relevant areas, such as behavioral science, criminology, psychiatry, law, and conflict management
• Relevant language skills
