Job Advertisement: Customs Officer at the Control Department

Do you want a varied and meaningful job with exciting tasks where you can contribute to creating a safe and secure society? Then a job in the Swedish Customs Control Department is for you.

The Control Department has a broad mandate to ensure that only approved goods pass the border. The mission involves conducting customs controls on imports and exports where the Customs Authority looks for goods that violate restrictions and ensures that the correct customs duties and taxes are collected. Controls are also conducted within the country after the goods have crossed the border. The Control Department works with the entire chain from intelligence, control, apprehension, and investigation. The operational work of the Control Department is carried out in groups that work with the entire mission of the Customs Authority.

About the Position

As a customs officer in the Control Department, you will work with a focus on operational controls in the mail and courier flow and conduct goods inspections within the responsibility area of the control group. The work involves reviewing and controlling shipments to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations, identifying prohibited or incorrectly declared goods, conducting physical inspections, documenting observations, and taking action according to established procedures.

In your daily work, you will use both technical aids and manual methods, and you need to make assessments based on risk, regulations, and situations. The work can at times be both physically and mentally demanding, and you may come into contact with chemicals or other goods that require precision, safety awareness, and responsibility.

The work is mainly done in groups and in close collaboration with colleagues, which requires good communication skills, a willingness to cooperate, and a professional attitude.

As a customs officer in the Control Department, you will work in uniform and meet the public, customers, and partners daily. It is therefore important that you have good judgment, feel secure in your professional role, and can meet people with respect, objectivity, and understanding – even in stressful situations. You are expected to be a good representative of the Customs Authority, both internally and externally, and work in accordance with the state’s value system and the Customs Authority's core values. The work involves shift work, so you need to be comfortable with irregular working hours.

We are looking for someone who has:

  • A high school diploma with at least a passing grade in Mathematics, Social Studies, Swedish, and English
  • At least four years of work experience
  • Good ability to communicate and express yourself well in spoken and written Swedish and English
  • A Swedish driving license, class B for passenger cars, and very good driving experience
  • Normal color vision
  • The work requires good physical condition and health since working hours can be irregular and the work and training are physically demanding
  • Swimming ability, 200 meters breaststroke

It is an advantage if you have:

  • Experience in taking responsibility and/or leading others – this can be within work, community life, sports, or other contexts where you have had a leadership role
  • Experience from roles where you have had a lot of contact with people and needed to adapt your approach and communication
  • The ability to communicate fluently in spoken languages other than Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, and English as assessed relevant by the employer
  • Experience working in mail and/or courier flows, for example at a mail terminal, distribution center, logistics operations, or similar environments where handling, sorting, and control of shipments have been involved

Personal Qualities

The work is done in groups, which requires that you as a person have great social competence and good collaborative skills. You are self-assured, responsible, service-oriented, have integrity, and can work independently within given frameworks and dare to take your own initiatives. As a person, you are stable, handle pressure well, and maintain composure even in stressful situations. Other important qualities are that you are legally aware, able to comply with laws and regulations, and have good judgment. You have a flexible attitude and can quickly adapt to changing circumstances.

As an employee at the Customs Authority, you are professional and work according to our values; responsibility, holistic view, and innovation. We place high demands on personal suitability with the ability to handle authority exercise.

Training and Employment

The employment start date is September 21, 2026. You will begin your employment as a customs trainee with a basic training program divided into theory and practical parts, totaling about 16 months. About 100 training days during the theory part will be held with attendance in Malmö.
