Expert in Cellular Communication Systems

The Total Defence Research Institute (FOI) is a government agency conducting world-leading research in defense and security to support Sweden's military and civil defense. The research spans several areas, including underwater, cyber defense, space, electronic warfare, sensor systems, civil defense, CBRNe (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive substances), military platforms including weapons and protection, as well as security policy analyses. FOI's research plays a key role in building Sweden's defense capability.

Do you want to use your knowledge of mobile networks to develop electronic warfare systems for signal intelligence and disruption of cellular communication technologies? Do you want to work with applied research and development at the forefront of technology? If so, you may be the one we are looking for to fill the role of expert in cellular communication systems!

About the Position

We are now looking for someone who wants to develop into one of our experts in the field of cyber-electromagnetic activities (CEMA), where we operate at the intersection of the radio and cyber domains. We study and analyze wireless communication protocols and cyber activities in our effort to sharpen functions for signal intelligence and disruption against the adversary's radio communication. Your expertise will develop as you, together with other experts, push the boundaries of technology to develop the next generation of systems and capabilities for electronic warfare.

Our operations have a broad technical scope, which means there are great opportunities for varied tasks. Depending on focus and interest, the tasks may include:

  • Algorithm development for intelligence and disruption functions
  • Analysis of modern communication protocols
  • Software and hardware development of our demonstrator systems
  • Conducting studies or experiments with future technologies
  • Expert support to the Armed Forces.

Our projects are carried out in close collaboration with our clients, and your contribution will be a significant part of the whole, and you will also have a great opportunity to influence the results. You will have good opportunities to follow an idea from sketch to finished system while deepening your knowledge in your area of expertise.

For a person with leadership qualities, the role may also involve project management in the long term. Since we test our systems in realistic environments with field measurements, it is a plus if you enjoy being outside of office and lab environments.

About the Unit

You will be part of the unit for Disruption of Radio Communication, which belongs to the department of Electronic Warfare. The unit's goal is to strengthen the Armed Forces' capability regarding disruption methods against radio communication in order to degrade an adversary's command capability. The unit's activities range from applied research and expert support to the development of electronic warfare systems against radio communication. We develop the entire chain from advanced algorithms and simulations to hardware prototypes tested in real environments together with our clients.

Do you have the competence profile we need?

Requirements

We are looking for someone who has:

  • Master's degree or equivalent in technical physics, electrical engineering, computer engineering, information technology, technical mathematics, or a field that FOI deems equivalent
  • Competence and experience in cellular communication technologies (e.g., 4G/LTE or 5G)
  • Good knowledge of Swedish and English, both spoken and written

As an employee at FOI, you will have a job with significant autonomy, so you need to be self-driven and have good initiative. Since you will be working in project form, you also need to enjoy developing solutions together with others. You should also have good analytical skills.

We place great importance on your personal qualities.

Meritorious

It is meritorious if you have competence and experience in:

  • Cybersecurity
  • Electronic warfare
  • Software development
  • Signal processing
  • Project management
  • Laboratory work

If you have a PhD in a relevant field, that is also meritorious.

We want to make use of all your skills and interests, so you are welcome to describe any other competencies you wish to continue developing with us.
