The Department of Medical Sciences is a large clinical institution with about 250 employees and over 900 affiliated with the Academic Hospital. The department has a broad research profile with strong research groups in various areas. Research takes place in close proximity to the clinical operations at the Academic Hospital and includes both basic studies on disease causes and the development and evaluation of improved diagnostics and new treatment methods. More about the department's activities can be found at https://www.uu.se/institution/medicinska-vetenskaper (https://www.uu.se/institution/medicinska-vetenskaper).
At the department, there is a research group in Clinical Psychiatry that investigates the major disease groups in psychiatry using various research methods. In the area of psychiatric brain stimulation, we have conducted several intervention studies with repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) where we examine both the clinical and neurobiological effects of the treatments. We are now planning to conduct a large study where we will investigate the clinical and neurobiological effects of rTMS on adolescent depression. The project is led by Professor Robert Bodén.
Job Responsibilities
As a PhD student, you will be part of the team researching psychiatric brain stimulation and will assist ongoing projects in various aspects. You will also independently drive the part of the project that will ultimately constitute your dissertation work, which will focus on evaluating the clinical effect of an intensive form of rTMS for adolescents with depression.
Furthermore, you will investigate the effect on brain signaling using EEG and fNIRS. The job responsibilities are related to project management, recruitment, diagnosis and psychological examination of patients, neurophysiological examination, cognitive testing and data simulation, planning and execution of rTMS treatment. You will also work with database management, data analysis, literature searches, method development, scientific writing, grant applications, and contact with national and international partners.
Additional tasks may include teaching.
The PhD training also includes research training courses equivalent to 30 credits.
