About Us
The Department of Engineering at the University of Skövde is characterized by a creative and dynamic environment, which includes a very good collaborative climate, modern facilities, and excellent industrial cooperation. The Department of Engineering has excellent applied research and high-quality education, as well as generating the funds and technical innovations that characterize a successful research environment. We work with an integrated educational value chain with known added values for the student, where our new engineering programs are CDIO-adapted and students have good opportunities for internships and work with our industry partners. The right candidate will be part of a team whose work is of great importance to industry, society, and academia.
Research studies are conducted in the field of information technology, which at the University of Skövde is defined as the subject that deals with how information is represented, processed, and communicated in artificial and natural systems, as well as how information technology systems are used and developed to achieve useful system solutions for individuals, organizations, or society.
The University of Skövde is a member of INGENIUM European University with partners from nine other European countries, providing our doctoral students with a unique opportunity to visit other partner universities and participate in joint graduate schools and other research activities. Scholarships are also available for short-term research stays. For more information, visit ingenium-university.eu (https://ingenium-university.eu/).
Your Role
The demographic development with an aging population, increased demands for healthcare services, and a reduction in resources places great demands on healthcare planning and strategy. In this project, simulation will be used as decision support to evaluate strategic healthcare initiatives before they are implemented.
As a doctoral student, you will be part of a research project focusing on developing, analyzing, and applying simulation models in various simulation paradigms (discrete event simulation, system dynamics, agent-based and/or hybrid models) within a regional healthcare context, with the goal of supporting strategic decisions. The work also includes identifying and analyzing conditions in the organization for systematically using simulation as well as challenges that arise. As a doctoral student, you will continuously collaborate with our partners. Due to this, it may be required that you travel and spend time with our partners in Sweden.
The position involves doctoral studies (80%) and departmental duties (teaching in the subject of industrial economics - e.g., production systems or production system development, simulation courses, etc. - and administrative tasks corresponding to 20%). Additional tasks may be included in the position.
We are looking for someone who has:
- completed a master's degree, or fulfilled course requirements of at least 240 ECTS credits, of which at least 60 ECTS credits at the master's level, or in some other way acquired equivalent knowledge within or outside Sweden.
- completed course requirements of at least 60 ECTS credits, including an independent thesis work of at least 15 ECTS credits at the master's level, in the field of information technology, closely related application areas, or other subject areas deemed directly relevant for dissertation work in the field of information technology such as mechanical engineering, production engineering, industrial economics, etc.
- documented language skills in English equivalent to the Swedish high school course English 6. This can also be demonstrated through an internationally recognized test such as IELTS (total score 6.5), TOEFL (total score 90), PTE (total score 62), etc.
- very good knowledge of Swedish, both spoken and written, as data collection will be conducted through discussions and interviews with Swedish-speaking participants.
We will also value the following assessment criteria in the employment:
- Good ability to benefit from education at the doctoral level.
- Documented good ability to express oneself in speech and writing in English.
- Documented good collaborative skills and good ability to work both independently and in groups.
- Documented good ability to plan, organize, and achieve set goals.
- Documented good knowledge in at least two of the following simulation paradigms: discrete event simulation, system dynamics, and agent-based modeling.
- Documented good knowledge in philosophies, methods, and tools within production engineering and business development, such as Lean, for the design and efficiency of systems, resource utilization, and bottleneck analysis.
In this employment, great emphasis will be placed on documented good knowledge in at least two of the following simulation paradigms: discrete event simulation, system dynamics, and agent-based modeling.
Employment Form:
The employment is a fixed-term position until the doctoral degree is obtained, but no longer than 5 years. The scope of employment is 100%, of which 80% is for doctoral studies and 20% is for departmental duties. Salary is based on the local agreement on salary scale for doctoral students. Only those who are accepted or have already been accepted to a doctoral education may be employed as a doctoral student.
Application Deadline:
