The Department of Odontology is responsible for the undergraduate education of dentists, dental hygienists, and dental technicians, as well as research in the field of dentistry.

Periodontology

Subject Description

The subject of periodontology is a central part of the undergraduate education for dentists and dental hygienists and includes etiology, pathogenesis, diagnostics, epidemiology, and treatment of diseases in the tissues around teeth and dental implants. Periodontitis is one of the most common diseases in humans. Similar conditions also occur in the tissues around dental implants. Research regarding diseases in the tissues around teeth and dental implants aims to improve knowledge about how these diseases can be detected early, how they develop, and how they can be treated most effectively.

Responsibilities

Teaching at undergraduate and advanced levels as well as supervision of thesis work within the dental and dental hygiene programs. Teaching is primarily conducted in Swedish. Course administration and course responsibility within the dental and dental hygiene programs.

Research and supervision in doctoral education within the field of periodontology. The responsibilities also include actively seeking funding for one's own research as well as for doctoral students.

Participation in further education and training within the field of periodontology is included in the responsibilities.

Clinical service as a specialist at a specialist clinic in periodontology.

Qualifications

Qualifications for employment as a teacher are regulated in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 and the University of Gothenburg's employment regulations.

A completed doctoral degree, demonstrated pedagogical skills, dental license, specialist competence in periodontology, and proficiency in Swedish in spoken and written form are required for the position.

The position requires, according to the National Board of Health and Welfare, the necessary knowledge of the Swedish, Danish, or Norwegian language to obtain a Swedish dental license.

Assessment Criteria

Assessment criteria for employment as a teacher are specified in the Higher Education Ordinance and in the University of Gothenburg's employment regulations.

In the first instance, scientific and pedagogical skills are assessed. These are weighted equally. Clinical skills and administrative skills are weighted equally and placed second.

In assessing scientific skills, great importance will be attached to documented ability and experience from research within the subject. Experience must be documented in the form of publications in international peer-reviewed journals. The ability to obtain research funding is an asset.

In assessing pedagogical skills, great importance will be attached to pedagogical skill and independence, in the form of documented experience from teaching and course administrative work at undergraduate and advanced levels.

In assessing clinical skills, particular importance will be attached to documented clinical experience within the specialty of periodontology.

In the appointment process, administrative skills and the ability to collaborate will also be considered.

Employment

Permanent position, full-time (100%), based at the Department of Odontology. Start date according to agreement.

Additional Information

If the applicant lacks formal higher education pedagogical training at the University of Gothenburg, the applicant is expected to have completed higher education pedagogical training or acquired equivalent knowledge within one year from the date of employment. The assessment of such higher education pedagogical merits will be conducted in a special order in accordance with a decision by the rector.
