Cultural Administration Seeks Young Reading Ambassadors

The Cultural Administration works for a free, rich, and strong cultural life throughout Västra Götaland. Together with municipalities, civil society, and other actors, we promote, support, and develop the region's cultural life. We also provide support to the region's cultural political bodies: the Cultural Committee and the Board for Cultural Development.

The Cultural Administration works to ensure that culture, nature, and cultural heritage are part of everyone's daily life. To carry out our mission with art, culture, nature, and cultural heritage, our core operations consist of two departments, each divided into several units. To coordinate cross-cutting issues, we work in a matrix, where our work with municipalities, children and youth, joint administration, and Agenda 2030 are some examples. The Department of Art and Culture offers knowledge and expertise in the art and culture field as support to municipalities, civil society, and other actors for the implementation and promotion of development within the cultural sector.

Description

We now want to further develop the method with young reading ambassadors in Gothenburg and enable the work to continue even after the initiative ends.

During the period 2022-2024, a project was conducted within the unit in close collaboration with the City of Gothenburg to develop reading promotion methods. The project resulted in a method handbook on working with young reading ambassadors. The method involves hiring young people as reading ambassadors to reach out and inspire more children and youth to read. The goal is to stimulate reading during leisure time and support children with weak language development to help more complete their studies.

The position is located in the Library and Literature unit, which is responsible for the statutory regional library assignment and literature as an art form based on the cultural collaboration model. The unit employs 16 consultants, several of whom work in areas related to reading promotion for children and youth.

Responsibilities

  • Explore and test various initiatives where the young reading ambassador method can be used to spread to more areas and activities within Gothenburg. This may include collaboration with housing companies, social services, cultural administration, associations, civil society, and study associations.
  • Support interested organizations in using young reading ambassadors so they can subsequently use the method independently.
  • Investigate the possibilities for young reading ambassadors to become part of Gothenburg's city work with cultural summer jobs.
  • Continuously follow up on the results of the initiatives and report back to the committee.

We are looking for

We are looking for someone with experience in reading promotion initiatives, method development, and project management. You have experience working closely with children and youth and understand their media worlds. You will develop and carry out the work with the project assignment in dialogue with colleagues and the manager, but you are responsible for driving the project by independently planning and evaluating.

To thrive in the role, you need to be comfortable meeting new people and enjoy working in teams and groups. You are unpretentious, can compromise, and focus on what is best for the whole. You will work in situations that require discussion and argumentation to reach common solutions. You have the ability to immerse yourself in new tasks, switch between them, and create your own work pace based on the needs of the organization.

Qualifications

Requirements

  • Post-secondary education with a degree in library science, literature, pedagogy, project management, or another academic education deemed equivalent by the employer.
  • Experience working with literature and/or reading promotion for and with children and youth.

Desirable

  • Experience in project management.
  • Experience and understanding of working in a politically governed organization and/or public administration.
  • Networks within municipal, regional, and national activities.
  • Knowledge of and experience with participation issues and children's rights.
  • Speaks one or more non-European languages.

Interviews will be conducted on 16/2 and 20/2.
