Job Advertisement: Oceanographic Measurement Technology

Are you interested in environmental monitoring and want to contribute to increased knowledge about the seas around Sweden? We offer you a job in an exciting and developing environment together with engaged and professional experts in technical measurement systems and measurements in the sea.

At the Observation Unit, six groups are responsible for collecting and delivering observational data in meteorology, hydrology, and oceanography, as well as managing and developing these measurements.

Oceanographic Measurement Technology is one of two groups within the Observation Unit located at SMHI's office at Nya Varvet in Gothenburg. The group consists of experienced engineers, oceanographers, and marine biologists with expertise in mechanics, electronics, and oceanography and collaborates with several other units within SMHI.

The group is responsible for the management and maintenance of oceanographic measurement systems used to monitor the seas around Sweden. The group handles both fixed and vessel-mounted systems as well as buoys in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. This work can sometimes be physically demanding. The work also includes measurement projects commissioned by SMHI's business operations, research department, and other authorities.

About the Position

The position is a combination of practical and administrative work, with much of the work being carried out at SMHI's premises at Nya Varvet in Gothenburg. The position also includes some shorter trips, 1 – 3 days, related to the deployment/service/retrieval of measurement systems 4 – 8 times/year, some week-long trips related to offshore expeditions for handling measurement platforms, and occasional domestic and international trips.

Your Role Includes:

  • maintaining, troubleshooting, calibrating, developing, and improving technical systems for measurements and sampling in the sea, such as fixed measurement systems, e.g., sea buoys, wave buoys, coastal buoys, and bottom-mounted systems, as well as measurement systems on board vessels
  • participating in the deployment, retrieval, and servicing of technical measurement systems in the field, using small workboats or vessels
  • structuring and administrating work in the workshop
  • ongoing quality work, which involves documenting work and producing results of good quality
  • managing collected data and participating in review, database entry, evaluation, and reporting

The employment may involve placement in a security class. Swedish citizenship and an approved security clearance with background check according to the Security Protection Act (2018:585) are prerequisites for employment.

About You

We are looking for someone with a high school education and previous work experience that SMHI considers relevant for the position. If you lack the mentioned work experience, you need to have post-secondary education in natural sciences or engineering.

It is advantageous if you have:

  • experience in handling, calibrating, and maintaining oceanographic instruments
  • worked with electronics and field buses at sea, as well as installations on vessels
  • experience in basic workshop work
  • experience in marine fieldwork on vessels and a Class VIII vessel command certificate
  • experience in electrical and mechanical CAD

As conditions during fieldwork can change rapidly, you need to be flexible and adaptable to changing circumstances. You are calm, attentive, and accommodating, and you find it easy to build relationships and collaborate with others. You are also meticulous and well aware of goals and quality standards. Since work on different systems often occurs in parallel within the group, it is important that you can plan, prioritize, and organize your work effectively.

Excellent knowledge of Swedish, as well as good knowledge of English, both spoken and written, is a requirement. You should also be proficient in a Windows or Linux-based PC client and have basic knowledge of word processing, presentation, and spreadsheet programs. You have deeper knowledge of computers and software to troubleshoot and configure settings. It is advantageous if you have knowledge in data communication, data loggers, and programming in Python.

A valid driver's license, Class B, is also a requirement for the position.
