Job Responsibilities

The current position is placed in Dr. Anna Munke's research group. The group's research focuses on structural studies of viruses, primarily using electron microscopy, but also with complementary methods to understand structure and function.

The project includes structural studies of diatom viruses aimed at increasing knowledge about the virus factories formed in diatoms. Job responsibilities include culturing diatoms for virus infection, characterizing infection (e.g., using electron microscopy and determining virus titers), purifying viruses and cell components, and structural determination using cryo-electron microscopy. You are also expected to take an active role in the group's overall research activities, including general laboratory tasks, equipment responsibility, and participation in the supervision of PhD students and project students.

Requirements for Employment

  • PhD degree in a subject relevant to the position, e.g., microbiology, biochemistry, or structural biology.
  • Excellent command of English, both spoken and written.
  • Documented practical experience in structural determination using cryo-electron microscopy.
  • Documented practical experience working with viruses.
  • Documented practical experience in culturing prokaryotic and/or eukaryotic algae.

Desirable Qualifications

Practical experience in the following is highly meritorious:

  • In situ structural determination using cryo-electron tomography.
  • Cloning, expression, purification, and characterization of proteins.
  • Supervision of students.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive, and independence, as well as how the applicant, through their experience and expertise, is assessed to complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department and contribute to its future development.

Conditions

The position is full-time (100%) and temporary for 7 months, with a desired start date of 2026-04-01 or by agreement.
