Director General at the Swedish Tax Agency

The Swedish Tax Agency is responsible for taxes, social fees, property taxation, population registration, personal names, registration of estate inventories, preventing and combating economic crime, and issuing ID cards to registered individuals. The agency aims to contribute to a well-functioning society and perform its tasks in a manner that is legally secure, cost-effective, and simple for both the public and businesses as well as the agency itself. The Swedish Tax Agency also provides tailored, accessible, and qualified information and services to the public and businesses. It serves as the preparedness authority in civil defense and is the sector responsible authority for the supply of basic data.

The Swedish Tax Agency is a central authority in the administration and takes on a broad responsibility in collaboration with other public actors. The agency also collaborates closely with the business community and the non-profit sector in various industry forums and networks to better meet the needs of individuals, businesses, and others affected by the agency's activities. Additionally, the Swedish Tax Agency participates in international cooperation with tax authorities in other countries and in several international forums.

The agency is led by a board consisting of a maximum of eight members. The head of the agency is the Director General, who is responsible for and leads the ongoing operations according to the board's directives and guidelines. There is also a Deputy Director General. The Director General decides on the Deputy Director General's tasks.

The Swedish Tax Agency operates throughout the country at operational offices in 46 locations, and the agency's management is located in Stockholm.

The agency has approximately 9,700 employees, making it one of Sweden's largest authorities. The Swedish Tax Agency is a knowledge organization, and its ongoing ambition is to actively work to be an attractive employer, focusing on leadership and employee relations, as well as collaboration to continue driving an efficient operation.

The current Director General's term will expire in the autumn of 2026. The government is therefore seeking a new team to lead the agency.

Qualifications

We are looking for a documented good manager and leader with:

  • experience leading through other managers,
  • experience working at the management level in a larger organization,
  • good knowledge of and experience in public administration and its decision-making processes,
  • understanding of the political structure within which the agency operates,
  • good language skills in Swedish and English,
  • an academic degree or equivalent.

You should also have the ability to:

  • lead and develop the operations of the Swedish Tax Agency together with the Director General,
  • drive and implement change and efficiency work,
  • have good social competence and communication skills,
  • have a trust-building approach towards employees as well as in contact with individuals and businesses,
  • ensure that operations are conducted as efficiently and rationally as possible within given financial and legal frameworks,
  • ensure that the agency meets its tasks in both peacetime crisis situations and during heightened preparedness,
  • lead and develop operations within the framework of a good administrative culture,
  • work strategically with competence supply,
  • represent the agency in external contexts, nationally and internationally, with a professional approach to clients, media, and other stakeholders,
  • represent employer interests.

It is meritorious if you have:

  • experience of collaboration with authorities and organizations,
  • experience from development and change work,
  • experience in one or more of the Swedish Tax Agency's operations or from operations with equivalent case volumes,
  • experience in legal, administrative, and public financial matters,
  • experience in work to prevent and combat crime,
  • experience in working with society's crisis preparedness and civil defense,
  • experience in EU work or other international cooperation.

Other

Only Swedish citizens can be appointed as Deputy Director General at the Swedish Tax Agency. The position is classified in a security class. A security check with a background check will therefore be conducted before a decision on employment as Deputy Director General.

The government employs the heads of authorities and decides on their employment conditions. Salaries are individual and determined based on the requirements of the position and the qualifications and experiences of the manager. Most heads of authorities are employed for a fixed term – normally, the first employment period is six years.
