Postdoctoral Researcher in Physics at Lund University
Lund University was founded in 1666 and is consistently ranked as one of the world's leading universities. It has around 47,000 students and more than 8,800 employees in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain, and improve our world and the conditions of humanity.
Lund University welcomes applicants from diverse backgrounds and experiences. Gender equality, equal opportunities, and diversity are fundamental principles for all parts of our operations.
Workplace Description
The position is affiliated with the Department of Solid State Physics at the Faculty of Science, a department with approximately 100 employees where extensive research is conducted centered around various aspects of nano- and semiconductor physics, ranging from materials science to bio- and quantum physics with various applications.
The department is a central part of NanoLund, which is Lund University’s large interdisciplinary research center for nanoscience and nanotechnology. The activities also include Lund Nano Lab, a central and shared facility for the fabrication of materials and components at the nanoscale. The department is also strongly engaged in undergraduate education, particularly within the Master’s program “Engineering Nanoscience” at LTH.
A significant portion of the research at the department focuses on semiconductor quantum structures where we develop new methods and functionalities, e.g., for quantum technology. The department also hosts the ERC Consolidator Grant project QPHOTON (PI Ville Maisi), which aims to build microwave photon counters as new measurement sensors. Ville Maisi's research group has extensive experience and expertise in microwave photons – semiconductor nanostructure circuits including coherent coupling of electrons and photons and electron charge detection.

Specific Subject Description
The goal of QPHOTON is to design, manufacture, and demonstrate a photon detector that counts microwave photons with high accuracy and low back-action. This enables the measurement of statistical properties of microwave signals. The role of this postdoctoral position is to create an understanding of the quantum measurement process and back-action effects occurring in our photon detectors.
Job Responsibilities
The main responsibilities of the postdoctoral researcher include conducting research. Teaching may also be included in the job responsibilities, but no more than one-fifth of the working time. Within the framework of the employment, there is an opportunity for three weeks of higher education pedagogical training. The purpose of the employment is to develop independence as a researcher and create conditions for further qualification.
The job responsibilities also include:
- conducting experiments with microwave resonator – semiconductor quantum dot circuits that measure the photonic and electronic response simultaneously.
- developing an understanding of quantum measurement processes by varying how strongly the photonic and electronic sides are measured.
The job responsibilities may also include cleanroom work for fabricating samples, collaboration and supervision of PhD students, as well as collaboration with theory groups to create theoretical understanding of the results.
Eligibility
Eligible for appointment as a postdoctoral researcher is someone who has obtained a doctoral degree, or a foreign degree that is deemed equivalent to a doctoral degree, in the relevant subject area. Proof that the eligibility requirement is met must be submitted no later than at the time the employment decision is made. Primarily, the applicant in question must have obtained their degree no more than three years before the application deadline. If there are special reasons, the doctoral degree may have been obtained earlier.
Other requirements:
- very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written

LTH – Lund University Faculty of Engineering – is the engineering faculty at Lund University. At LTH, we educate people, build knowledge for the future, and work hard to develop society. We create space for brilliant research and inspire creative development in technology, architecture, and design. Nearly 10,000 students study here. Each year, our researchers – many of whom work in world-leading profile areas – publish around 100 dissertations and 2,000 scientific results. A number of research results and student projects are refined into innovations. Together we explore and create – for the benefit of the world.
The Department of Physics is one of Lund University's largest departments with around 400 employees. The department has seven research divisions and several larger centers. The research at the department covers a wide spectrum of modern physics. www.fysik.lu.se (www.fysik.lu.se).
