Job Responsibilities and Duties

We are looking for a person who actively and with great commitment takes on the role of professor in social work at the School of Social Work in Lund.

The position includes research as well as teaching and supervision at undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels. The professor is expected to actively seek research funding that benefits the department, lead research environments and projects, and participate in seminar activities and the national and international research debate. The professor is also expected to actively contribute to collaborations both within the faculty, Lund University, and with external actors. These duties require a high physical presence at the workplace.

Eligibility

Eligible for appointment as a professor is someone who has demonstrated both scientific and pedagogical competence (Higher Education Ordinance 4 chap. 3 §). The applicant must clearly document current and internationally prominent academic merits including research as well as management of research programs and teaching. The scientific competence must have been demonstrated through independent research efforts that significantly exceed the requirements for docent competence. The pedagogical competence should partly be shown in the form of completed higher education pedagogical training comprising at least five weeks or through equivalent knowledge acquired in other ways.

The applicant must have documented teaching experience at undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels and must, in order to be eligible, have supervised at least one doctoral student to graduation.

Teaching occurs in Swedish and English. An applicant whose native language is not Swedish and who accepts the position is therefore expected to acquire sufficient knowledge of the Swedish language (spoken and written) within two years to be able to teach in Swedish, as well as to actively participate in management, administration, and other relevant activities conducted in Swedish.

Assessment Criteria

The applicant should have a strong grounding in the subject of social work and social science research. It is meritorious if the applicant conducts research related to the upbringing conditions of children and youth, social vulnerability, and social problems.

Of great importance is that the applicant has established themselves as an independent researcher at an international level by having:

  • contributed to important and innovative knowledge development within their own research
  • demonstrated significant skill in the use of scientific methods and social science theories
  • published in internationally prominent journals and publishers in accordance with prevailing research traditions
  • documented ability to plan and lead scientific activities
  • documented national and international research collaboration
  • secured research grants as the main applicant and in competition

Equal care is given to the assessment of pedagogical competence as to scientific.

In assessing pedagogical competence, consideration is given to experience in teaching and other pedagogical activities at all levels, as well as supervision and examination. The ability to supervise doctoral students to doctoral degrees is a particularly important assessment criterion.

The applicant should have very good collaborative skills, good administrative competence, good communication skills, and possess the other qualities necessary to effectively perform the duties of a professor. The applicant should demonstrate a good ability to collaborate with the surrounding community and to disseminate research results outside the university context.
