Job Advertisement: Research Engineer in Radar Signatures
The Total Defence Research Institute (FOI) is a government agency conducting world-leading research in defence and security to support Sweden's military and civil defence. The research spans several areas, including underwater, cyber defence, space, electronic warfare, sensor systems, civil defence, CBRNe (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive substances), military platforms including weapons and protection, as well as security policy analyses. FOI's research plays a key role in building Sweden's defence capability.
Are you interested in using your strong technical skills to develop new technology that strengthens Sweden's defence and security? Then FOI could be your new workplace! We offer a balanced work life, a developing work environment, and a socially important job!
About the Position
With us, you will work alongside experienced researchers to develop and use advanced experimental measurement systems for radar signatures and antenna properties. The unit has both measurement chambers and specialized measurement sites where we combine high-tech equipment such as network and spectrum analyzers with mechanical systems and antennas.
You will use your expertise in programming and instrument control to build, further develop, and operate our measurement systems. The tasks also include experimental planning and execution, basic signal processing and data analysis, as well as close collaboration with both internal and external partners.
The work is carried out in collaboration with colleagues at FOI and in contact with the Swedish Armed Forces and FMV. A natural part of the role is also to contribute to a good and safe work environment.
About the Unit
You will be part of the Radar Signatures unit, which belongs to the Electronic Warfare department in Linköping.
Our mission is to support Sweden's defence by assessing the utility of various technologies, methods, and products in the field of radar signatures.
A radar signature describes how an object is perceived by a radar system. It can involve how a drone reflects incoming radar waves towards a radar sensor – which in turn can determine whether the drone is detected or remains undetected. Through our analyses and experiments, we contribute to strengthening the understanding of such phenomena and thus to the development of effective protection and detection capabilities.
Do you have the competence profile we need?
Requirements
We are looking for someone who has:
- A Master's degree in engineering in technical physics, mechanical engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, control engineering, or other experience deemed equivalent by FOI
- Knowledge of instrument control for testing or measurement activities and development of its software
- Good practical skills – you enjoy hands-on work and can handle both measurement equipment and measurement objects
- A valid driver's license (B)
We place great importance on your personal qualities. We value that you are self-driven and proactive with good collaboration and problem-solving skills. In addition to your technical and scientific knowledge, you need to have very good knowledge of Swedish, both spoken and written.
Meritorious
Knowledge of programming languages such as MATLAB, Python, C/C++. Understanding of networks and remote control solutions, as well as experience configuring these. Work experience involving instrument control. Experience with radar target or antenna measurements and knowledge of microwave technology. Experience with real-time systems.
