PhD Candidate in Inorganic Chemistry
The Department of Chemistry - Ångström conducts research and education in the field of chemistry.
The department has 270 employees and a turnover of 300 million SEK. At the department's six programs, highly successful research of international caliber is conducted. We have a large number of externally funded research projects, often with international collaboration, and we see continued good growth in our field. The department has educational assignments within engineering and master's programs. More information can be found on our website (https://www.uu.se/medarbetare/institution/kemi-angstrom).
Job Description
PhD candidate in the research program for inorganic chemistry. The research focuses on the development of next-generation thermoelectric materials through advanced nanotechnology. The project aims to significantly improve thermoelectric performance by decoupling the key thermoelectric properties using a design strategy with “alloyed nanoparticles” within an inorganic thin-film system. The central goal of the research is to tailor the interface structure and the electronic interactions between magnetic nanoparticles and a degenerate semiconductor matrix. The proposed synthesis route, which is entirely based on physical vapor deposition, a process that significantly deviates from equilibrium, is unique and enables the development of entirely new nanocomposites, such as those envisioned in this project. The research serves as a breeding ground for scientific innovation within the current project but also has the potential to impact other related areas.
The research includes studies from material synthesis, thin-film deposition, advanced structural and magnetic characterization to thermoelectric and electronic transport measurements. The project also includes a theoretical component, including theoretical predictions about material stability and properties, conducted in collaboration with the Department of Physics at Linköping University. Depending on the candidate's interests, participation in this theoretical work may vary from collaboration to direct engagement in modeling and simulations.
The job responsibilities may also include, for example, teaching, supervision of theses, collaboration with other university partners, and administration related to the above job responsibilities.
Qualifications
Eligible for doctoral education is someone who has:
- completed a master's degree in material chemistry, materials science, material physics, or equivalent
- completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level (of which 15 higher education credits constitute independent work), with content relevant to doctoral education or
- acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way, within or outside the country
The applicant must also have:
- very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written.
Great emphasis will also be placed on personal qualities such as good collaboration skills, drive, and independence, as well as how the applicant is assessed through their experience and competence to have the ability needed to complete the doctoral education.
Desirable/Meritorious
A background in chemistry, physics, materials science, or a related field is meritorious. Experience with vacuum systems, thin-film growth, nanomaterials, solid-state physics, or thermoelectric characterization is also meritorious.
