Tandem Laboratory at Uppsala University is Hiring a Sample Preparer

The Tandem Laboratory is a national research infrastructure at Uppsala University that works on the application and development of advanced methods for material characterization using ion accelerators.

A significant branch of the Tandem Laboratory is advanced radiometry and isotope analysis, including the carbon-14 method for dating various objects. The equipment includes a total of 4 accelerators, several ion sources, and many different experimental measurement stations with advanced detector equipment and complex electronics for analysis and data management. In addition, there are extensive laboratory facilities for sample preparation.

The applicant will, in collaboration with other employees, be involved in sample preparation and take responsibility for the operation, maintenance, planning, documentation, and quality control of technical equipment and experiments. Equipment includes ultra-high vacuum systems, high-voltage apparatus, and control electronics.

Responsibilities

• Chemical preparation of sample materials for dating using the 14C method.
• Operation, installation, and testing of relevant research equipment with a focus on isotope analysis.
• Operation, maintenance, and development of vacuum, electrical, and electronic equipment.
• Handling of cryogenic media.
• Loading samples into ion source holders for running in the accelerator.
• Routine laboratory handling of glassware, etc.
• Administrative tasks for documentation of laboratory processes.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in engineering, physics, chemical engineering, or equivalent work experience in a relevant field. We are looking for qualified and motivated candidates with a strong interest in supporting academic research. We expect you to take responsibility, manage multiple activities simultaneously, be innovative, and have a genuine interest in technology and natural sciences. Good oral and written proficiency in English is required, as well as the ability to take initiative and work both independently and in a team.

Desirable/meritorious

Knowledge and experience in mechanical work and quality control are meritorious.
