Department of Geological Sciences
The Department of Geological Sciences is part of the Faculty of Science at Stockholm University.
The department consists of approximately 80 employees, including teachers, researchers, PhD students, and technical/administrative staff. The activities at the department encompass a wide range of fundamental and applied research in marine geology and geophysics, geochemistry, and classical geology.
More information about us can be found at: https://www.su.se/institutionen-for-geologiska-vetenskaper/ (https://www.su.se/institutionen-for-geologiska-vetenskaper/).
Project Description
This PhD project aims to investigate the behavior of rare earth elements (REE) during multiphase deformation. To achieve this, the project will integrate quantitative analyses of REE-bearing minerals in rocks and veins – based on petrological, geochemical, and geochronological data.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to conduct fieldwork in the Alps.
As part of this four-year project, you will receive training in thermodynamic modeling and microanalytical techniques (scanning electron microscopy, electron microprobe, Raman microspectroscopy, laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, secondary ion mass spectrometry) to reconstruct the extent and mechanisms of REE mobility during multiphase deformation. The project will be based at Stockholm University and supported by a network of national and international collaborators.
Eligibility Requirements
To be admitted to doctoral education, the applicant must have both general and specific eligibility. The eligibility must be fulfilled by the last application date.
General eligibility is met if you have completed a degree at the advanced level, or have completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits (hp), of which at least 60 hp at the advanced level, or have otherwise acquired substantially equivalent knowledge within or outside the country.
Specific eligibility is described in the general study plan for doctoral education in the subject of geology:
- at least 90 hp in geoscience
- at least 30 hp in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and/or biology depending on the chosen subject orientation within geology
- additionally at least 60 hp at the advanced level, including 30 hp of independent work in geoscience.
Specific eligibility is also granted to those who have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in another manner within or outside the country.
Selection
Selection among the applicants will be based on the ability to benefit from doctoral education. Criteria used to assess this ability include:
- documented knowledge of petrology and geochemistry
- written and oral proficiency in English
- analytical thinking ability and ability to collaborate
- creativity, initiative, and independence.
The assessment will be based on previous experiences and grades, the quality of the thesis, references, relevant experience, interviews, and the applicant's written motivation for applying for the position. Experience in petrographic analysis of metamorphic and/or magmatic rocks, microanalytical studies, and possibly thermodynamic modeling is an advantage.
