Meteorological Institution at Stockholm University (MISU)

The Meteorological Institution at Stockholm University (MISU) conducts research and education that spans the atmosphere, ocean, and physically based climate science.

We offer educational programs at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels. Our research seeks answers to fundamental questions about the dynamic, physical, chemical, and biogeochemical properties of the atmosphere and oceans that are relevant to weather and climate. The research activities are broad and encompass processes ranging from the deep sea to the upper atmosphere, and from the tropics to the poles. We utilize and develop theory, statistical methods, and numerical models in close interplay with observations. Additionally, the institution develops and leads observation-based research supported by satellites, Arctic icebreaker expeditions, and land-based instruments.

MISU is part of a larger research environment at the university, including Bolin Center for Climate Research (https://www.su.se/enheter/bolincentret-for-klimatforskning), Stockholm University Baltic Sea Centre (https://www.su.se/enheter/stockholms-universitets-ostersjocentrum), and e-science.se (https://e-science.se/). The institution is an international workplace, with over half of the staff having a background outside Sweden. Project Description

This project aims to expand our understanding of how aerosols are transported from mid-latitudes to polar regions, how aerosols interact with various climate processes, and how these interactions change in a changing climate. The position is linked to a project funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation called “Feedbacks between sea ice, ocean, clouds, and aerosols in changing polar climates (ACCELERATE)”. The overarching ambition of ACCELERATE is to deliver more robust climate projections by contributing frameworks for climate models regarding cloud feedbacks in polar regions.

Job Responsibilities

The main task is to study aerosol transport to and from polar regions using the FLEXPART model and other tools.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for a postdoctoral position, a PhD degree or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a relevant PhD degree is required. The degree must be obtained by the time the employment decision is made.

Assessment Criteria

It is advantageous if the PhD degree or equivalent has been obtained no more than three years before the application deadline. If there are special reasons, a previously obtained degree may also be considered advantageous. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, elected positions within trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or relevant service/assignments in the subject area.

The PhD degree must be in meteorology, atmospheric science, oceanography, or another relevant field. In the appointment process, special emphasis will be placed on scientific competence within the area of employment. The applicant is also expected to have excellent oral and written skills in English. Experience using the FLEXPART model to study aerosol transport is an asset.

About the Position

The position is full-time and is permanent, but at least two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension if there are special reasons. Start date is 2026-03-01 or by agreement.
