Engaged Chemist Wanted for PKU Laboratory

Are you an engaged chemist looking to make a difference? The PKU laboratory at the Center for Congenital Metabolic Diseases (CMMS) is expanding and is looking for a new colleague! Our analyses are world-class and contribute to more patients receiving early diagnosis and treatment.

Apply today and become part of our wonderful team!

You will be offered

An exciting and varied job at the PKU laboratory, the sole provider of the so-called “PKU test” administered to all newborns in Sweden. You will be part of a team with close collaboration among various professional groups such as biomedical analysts, hospital chemists, doctors, and administrative staff. Furthermore, you will work in an expanding organization with good opportunities for stimulating and developing work.

Of course, you will also benefit from our general perks offered by Karolinska University Hospital.

About the position

At CMMS, we work with the diagnostics of many different metabolic diseases and cover a large part of the country.

CMMS also conducts nationwide screening of newborns to identify treatable congenital diseases early using the so-called “PKU test” (Phenylketonuria). Since the inception of the PKU disease in 1965, new diseases have been gradually added, and we currently screen for 26 different treatable diseases.

The methods currently used in daily screening operations include immunological antibody-based methodologies, mass spectrometry, enzyme analyses, qPCR, ddPCR, and DNA sequencing. Furthermore, we are developing various new methods to continuously improve screening and prepare for new diseases that may be added to the screening program.

We at the PKU laboratory are a group consisting of biomedical analysts, chemists, molecular biologists, and doctors who work closely together. As our operations expand, we now need another engaged hospital chemist.

In your role as a hospital chemist, you will develop, validate, and implement new methods while continuously improving existing analytical methods and associated processes. You will be responsible for method maintenance, assist in troubleshooting, and provide support in result evaluation. The work includes both routine and project-oriented tasks. Additionally, you will be responsible for quality assurance. Externally, you are also expected to supervise students and network with other laboratories.
