Postdoctoral Researcher in Dark Matter and Statistical Data Analysis

Fysikum is one of the largest institutions within the Faculty of Science at SU and conducts a wide range of fundamental research in experimental and theoretical physics.

The department has about 250 employees, of which 95 are PhD students. Many are internationally recruited. Fysikum is part of the AlbaNova University Center, which also houses the Department of Astronomy, the physics departments at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), and the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics (Nordita).

Fysikum and Stockholm University are connected to the Stockholm Dual Career Network (SDCN), which offers expat partners professional events, career support, and opportunities to build networks in their new hometown https://www.sdcn.se/ (https://www.sdcn.se/).

Project Description

The project concerns the direct detection of dark matter and other rare signals with the XENONnT experiment and preparation for the next generation detector XLZD. XENONnT is a two-phase time projection chamber with liquid xenon at LNGS, with an active mass of 5.9 tons, optimized to detect WIMPs with sensitivity to spin-independent cross-sections down to about 10⁻⁴⁸ cm². The low background levels and improved calibrations enable searches for low-energy electron recoil signals from axions, dark photons, and other candidates beyond the Standard Model. The detector also investigates coherent elastic neutrino scattering (CEνNS) and sets limits on neutrino magnetic moments as well as couplings between axions and electrons. XENONnT is part of the XLZD consortium, which aims to unite the expertise from the XENON, LUX-ZEPLIN, and DARWIN collaborations to create a next-generation dark matter observatory. SU has extensive experience within XENON with leading positions in the operation of the experiment, development of photo sensors, data management, and statistical analysis.

Job Responsibilities

The postdoctoral researcher is expected to work in the areas of statistical data analysis including machine learning, Monte Carlo simulations, operation and calibration of the XENONnT detector, as well as possibly testing and characterization of photo sensors.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctoral researcher, a PhD degree or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a relevant PhD is required. The degree must have been awarded no later than when the employment decision is made.

Assessment Criteria

It is advantageous if the PhD or equivalent has been awarded no more than three years before the last application date. If there are special reasons, an earlier degree may also be considered advantageous. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, trust assignments within trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or relevant service/assignments for the subject area.

In the appointment, special emphasis will be placed on scientific competence.

About the Employment

The position is full-time and is permanent, but for at least two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension if there are special reasons. Start date by agreement.
