Researcher in Experimental Physics at FOI
The Total Defence Research Institute (FOI) is a government agency conducting world-leading research in defense and security to support Sweden's military and civil defense. The research spans several areas, including underwater, cyber defense, space, electronic warfare, sensor systems, civil defense, CBRNe (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive materials), military platforms including weapons and protection, as well as security policy analysis. FOI's research plays a key role in building Sweden's defense capability.
Would you like to work in a workplace with unique expertise and important projects within Swedish defense, society, and the environment? At FOI, we work with research for a safer world. Do you want to contribute with your expertise? We are now looking for new colleagues with a PhD in experimental physics!
What will you contribute to our work?
You will work in a group primarily focused on research and development in marine electromagnetism. The group conducts research on prediction, reduction, propagation, and analysis of electromagnetic underwater signatures, as well as detection, localization, and classification of signals from underwater sensor systems. We support the Armed Forces and the Defence Materiel Administration in improving today's and developing tomorrow's systems for measuring and analyzing underwater signatures, reconnaissance, and communication, as well as assisting in the training of units. We participate in laboratory activities and field trials. We collaborate with various national and international research organizations, and both shorter and longer trips may occur. The work is conducted in project form, involving both independent work and collaboration in groups. The work is primarily based in Kista but also throughout Sweden and with our foreign partners.
Do you have the competence profile we need?
Requirements:
- You should have a PhD or possess equivalent knowledge and skills in experimental physics, electrical engineering, or a related field.
- You have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, are self-driven, and are eager to take initiatives that you can also translate into practical solutions. You collaborate well with others and express yourself fluently in both spoken and written Swedish and English.
Meritorious:
- You have knowledge in some relevant areas such as: construction of experimental equipment, electromagnetism, programming and analysis of data from experiments, low-noise electrical measurement techniques, GNU/Linux or real-time operating systems, electronics, sensor-near signal processing, power engineering, material properties, mechanical design, and vacuum technology.
- It is an advantage if you have worked with research and development at an academic research facility, institute, or industrial laboratory, preferably abroad, in addition to your PhD.
What do we offer you?
At FOI, you will have the opportunity to work on issues that are important for both total defense and society as a whole. Together with others, you will have the opportunity to create new perspectives and solutions to complex issues and see the results realized with our clients. Your expertise contributes to making important societal functions, such as the Armed Forces and the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency, more efficient, knowledgeable, and stronger in their respective areas.
You will be part of our underwater research activities within the Defense Technology department. Please read more about what we do: Underwater Research (https://www.foi.se/forskning/undervattensforskning.html)
The position is a permanent employment starting with a six-month probationary period.
We consciously work for a good work environment with a good balance between work and private life. In addition, we offer a range of benefits.
