Do you want to work with technical support in laboratory operations, alongside competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Welcome to apply for a position as a research engineer at Uppsala University.

The position is located at the Department of Chemistry – BMC where we conduct chemical research focused on life sciences. We have an extensive array of instruments for the production, purification, and analysis of bioactive molecules, biomolecules, and biological samples. We also provide education at the bachelor, master, and doctoral levels in analytical chemistry, biochemistry, and organic chemistry with well-equipped laboratory courses for this purpose. We are looking for a research engineer to join the department's shared support function. The unit consists of three research engineers whose primary task is to assist the department's researchers and teachers with technical and laboratory support. We collaborate with the department's administrative staff and central support functions at both university and campus levels to provide the core operations with the best possible service.

Job Responsibilities

The tasks are very varied as they are based on the needs of the core operations. You will primarily be responsible for purchasing and unpacking consumables and chemicals, handling laboratory waste, facility inventory, and inventory of chemicals in the chemical management system KLARA. Furthermore, you will be the contact person for the property management/Academic House during renovations and installation of infrastructure in our premises, as well as handling fault reports and performing ongoing maintenance of simpler instruments and basic infrastructure. Some unqualified tasks are also included in the position.

The support function is responsible for informing the department's other employees about the university's and department's rules and procedures in various areas. You are expected to participate in this work, mainly by keeping yourself updated on both internal and external safety regulations and contributing to maintaining a safe laboratory environment. We expect you to develop in your work, and in the long run, there is the possibility of more advanced tasks.

Qualifications

We are looking for someone with a scientific or technical university education, preferably with a focus on chemistry/chemical engineering, or equivalent. You should have good knowledge of organic chemistry. Excellent knowledge of Swedish and English, both spoken and written, is a requirement. This means that you should be able to understand official texts in Swedish and summarize them in English for non-Swedish speaking staff. You should be able to work in a Windows environment and have good knowledge of MS Office. You are expected to quickly learn several administrative systems used at Uppsala University. The department's premises are spread throughout the building, and there will be lifting and moving of various equipment. Therefore, it is important that you are in good physical shape.

Since your main task is to support researchers and teachers in their work, you must be service-oriented and flexible, as well as have good collaboration skills. You need to be self-driven and structured, as you will largely be responsible for planning your work. It is also important that you can prioritize among your tasks effectively, as there may be peaks of high workload and conflicting demands from the operations. Personal qualities will be given great importance.

Desirable/meritorious

Documented experience of systematic work environment management in a laboratory environment. Experience in instrument maintenance and knowledge of basic infrastructure in a laboratory environment.
