Research Position in Human Population Genetics

The position is placed in Carina Schlebusch's research group and the research is conducted within the Human Evolution program at the Department of Organismal Biology (Evolutionary Biology Centre, Uppsala University). The Human Evolution program has a broad focus on population genetics and human evolution. The Schlebusch group specifically focuses on mapping human history on the African continent by using genetic data from both contemporary populations and ancient remains. The group is funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation as well as the Swedish Research Council. The research environment is interdisciplinary, focusing on ancient DNA, population genomics, and bioinformatics, and is strongly international with English as the working language. Job Responsibilities

The main responsibilities include overseeing bioinformatics analyses of population genetic data from both modern and ancient DNA datasets. The purpose of the work is to enhance the understanding of the African population structure and genetic changes related to lifestyle and environmental changes over time.

Qualifications

PhD in population genetics. Previous experience with large-scale genetic data analyses, bioinformatics, and programming in R, Shell/Bash, and Python is required. Previous experience analyzing protein data is also required. We are looking for someone with a strong background in population genomics, human evolution, and bioinformatics. Excellent communication skills in Swedish are necessary. Very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written, is required.

Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities such as good collaboration skills and independence.

Desirable/meritorious

Interest in or background in African population history is meritorious.

About the Position

The position is permanent (a probationary period may apply). The extent is full-time. Start date is May 1, 2025, or by agreement. Location: Uppsala.
