Postdoctoral Researcher in Single-Cell Phenotyping of Microalgae and Lipidomics

Uppsala University is now seeking a postdoctoral researcher in single-cell phenotyping of microalgae and lipidomics.

The project offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of biotechnology and environmental science by utilizing advanced microfluidics, high-content imaging, and lipidomics to revolutionize microalgae-based biofuel production and ecosystem restoration. Please note that the project involves extended stays at both Uppsala University in Sweden and the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Project Overview

Microalgae are crucial for bioenergy, food, and climate resilience, yet their phenotypic characterization remains a challenge. This project aims to develop an advanced phenotyping platform that integrates microfluidics and high-content imaging to identify microalgae with enhanced lipid production and thermal tolerance. By selecting and developing microalgae with desired traits, this research can transform the economic feasibility of microalgae production through assisted evolutionary strategies. You will contribute to groundbreaking research with real-world applications in sustainable biotechnology. This interdisciplinary project also includes collaboration with international experts in lipidomics.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and optimize microfluidic platforms for single-cell phenotyping of microalgae.
  • Conduct high-content imaging (fluorescence, quantitative phase imaging, PAM microscopy) to analyze single-cell properties.
  • Perform single-cell lipidomics to establish correlations between phenotypic traits and lipid content.
  • Integrate automation and data processing systems for high-capacity selection of microalgae.
  • Conduct experiments on microalgae.
  • Analyze experimental data and write scientific publications and presentations.
  • Collaborate with researchers at Uppsala University and DTU.

Qualifications

  • PhD in (bio)engineering, microbiology, biophysics, or related fields. The degree must be completed by the time the employment decision is made. Preference will be given to candidates who have completed their degree within the last three years. In calculating the three-year time frame, the deadline for applications is the starting point. If there are special reasons, the degree may have been obtained earlier. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, or union duties.
  • Expertise in microfluidics, microalgae cultivation, high-content imaging, or lipidomics.
  • Experience with fluorescence microscopy, PAM microscopy, or single-cell imaging techniques.
  • Excellent communication skills in English (both spoken and written).

Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities such as strong analytical skills, independence, and a good ability to collaborate internationally.

Desirable/meritorious

  • Programming skills (e.g., Python, MATLAB) for data analysis are a strong merit.

About the Employment

The position is a fixed-term appointment for 2 years according to the central collective agreement. The extent is full-time. Start date is 2025-06-01 or by agreement. Placement: The selected candidate will be employed at Uppsala University but will split their time between two leading research institutions:

  • DTU Bioengineering (Copenhagen, Denmark), year 1 – Method development
  • Uppsala University, Department of Organism Biology (Sweden), year 2 – Experimental work

Application Process:

CV with relevant research experience and publications. A motivation letter (max 2 pages) describing research interests and suitability for the position. Contact details for two references.

For inquiries about the position, please contact: Dr. Lars Behrendt +46 763151045, lars.behrendt@scilifelab.uu.se.
