Postdoctoral Researcher in the FASTCORR Network

Do you want to work with the latest theoretical methods to control materials using ultrafast lasers within a world-leading ERC-funded network, supported by competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Do you want an employer that invests in sustainable employment and offers secure, favorable working conditions? Welcome to apply for a postdoctoral position within the FASTCORR network at the Department of Materials Theory at the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Uppsala University.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy is one of Uppsala University's largest departments with approximately 400 employees, of which about 100 are doctoral students. The department is located at the Ångström Laboratory and conducts world-class research and education in both theoretical and experimental physics and has extensive collaboration with the outside world. Project Description

As a member of the FASTCORR project, you will work with first-principles calculations to understand and predict non-equilibrium physics in light-matter interaction and ultrafast dynamics on femtosecond and sub-femtosecond scales. The project is conducted in close collaboration with world-leading experimental groups using pump-probe measurements. By understanding the origin of measured signals, we can answer fundamental questions in materials science and improve our theoretical models. This postdoctoral project aims to use and develop methods based on time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) to study non-equilibrium physics where, for example, electronic, magnetic, and structural degrees of freedom are strongly coupled.

Responsibilities

The successful applicant will develop and apply theoretical methods to simulate laser-induced non-equilibrium dynamics in materials, focusing on time-dependent density functional theory. The project involves collaboration with colleagues in experimental groups, phenomenological models, and first-principles tools for correlated and magnetic materials. The position includes work within the project for up to two years. In addition to research, supervision of doctoral students, master's students, and project students, as well as scientific communication through articles in reputable journals and presentations at international conferences, is included.

Qualifications

A PhD in physics with a focus on condensed matter physics or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a PhD in physics. The degree must be completed by the time the employment decision is made. Preference should be given to those who have completed their degree within the last three years. When calculating the three-year time frame, the last application date is the starting point. If there are special reasons, such a degree may have been obtained earlier. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, trust assignments within trade unions, etc.

Furthermore, the following is required:

  • Solid background in theoretical electronic structure and magnetism/lattice dynamics.
  • Very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written.
  • Experience with ab initio electronic structure calculations for solid-state physics.
  • Experience with high-performance computing (HPC).
  • Ability to work independently and in a structured manner.
  • Good collaborative skills in an international team.

Desirable/meritorious

  • Experience in non-equilibrium physics.
  • Knowledge of time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT).
  • Excellent programming skills (e.g., Python, C++, or Fortran).

About the Position

The position is temporary for two years according to the central collective agreement. The extent is full-time. Start date by agreement. Location: Uppsala
