The University of Gothenburg meets societal challenges with versatile knowledge. With 56,000 students and 6,600 employees, the university is a large and inspiring workplace. Strong research and attractive education attract researchers and students from all over the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University of Gothenburg contributes to a better future.

At the Department of Medicine, Division of Molecular and Clinical Medicine, translational research is conducted primarily around metabolism, diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease with the aim of improving health and healthcare in society. The overarching goal is to create an excellent translational research environment of very high international standard.

Myocardial infarction is today one of the most common causes of death, despite modern treatment. Approximately 10% of patients hospitalized for myocardial infarction develop the complication acute ischemic heart failure (AIHF). These patients with AIHF account for half of all deaths within 30 days after myocardial infarction. The prognosis for patients with AIHF has not improved in the last decade. The overall purpose of our research work is to investigate how to improve the prognosis for AIHF by better understanding and manipulating the phenomenon of 'myocardial stunning' (sudden but potentially reversible loss of heart function that occurs in AIHF) in order to increase and optimize heart function. Björn Redfors' research group conducts several registry studies as well as clinical studies and drug trials based at Sahlgrenska University Hospital and sites across Europe.
