PhD Candidate in Wireless Communication
The Department of Computer and Electrical Engineering offers education in the fields of computer engineering, electronics, electrical engineering, and sound production. Research at the department is conducted at the research center Sensible Things that Communicate (www.miun.se/stc (http://www.miun.se/stc)) and focuses on sensor-based systems and services for use in the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence.
We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to participate in an exciting research collaboration between Mid Sweden University (MIUN) in Sweden and the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) in Pakistan.
The selected candidate will spend the first year of their PhD studies at NUST in Pakistan and the following three years at MIUN in Sweden. Additionally, the candidate will have the opportunity to spend time with industrial partners to gain practical experience in an industry-driven research environment.
The PhD position is part of the international graduate school IRS TransTech, where you will have the opportunity to collaborate with leading international universities and Swedish companies. The graduate school focuses on transformative technologies such as AI, IoT, and advanced materials to drive sustainable industrial development and strengthen international research and business networks.
This PhD project focuses on the development of localization and positioning solutions in cellular networks by utilizing uplink channel state information (CSI). The research will include the design of flexible and programmable radio systems, such as base station architectures, and explore the integration of simultaneously transmitting and reflecting configurable intelligent surfaces (STAR-RIS) within the sub-10 GHz spectrum.
As part of the position, you will work closely with leading academic and industrial experts and contribute to groundbreaking innovations in next-generation wireless communication systems.
Responsibilities
As a PhD candidate, your main task will be to conduct research and doctoral education. You will work closely with researchers at Mid Sweden University, NUST, and a Swedish company. The position involves 100% research, and the candidate is expected to conduct both theoretical and experimental research.
Eligibility
Basic eligibility is granted to those who have obtained a master's degree or completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level, or in some other way acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or abroad. Special eligibility is granted to those who have at least 90 higher education credits in computer engineering or in some other way acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or abroad. A master's degree in wireless communication, electrical engineering, signal processing, computer engineering, or engineering physics is a suitable background for this position.
Assessment Criteria
In addition to the formal eligibility requirements, selection will also be based on other work (e.g., thesis), advanced courses, and interviews with applicants. A strong background in wireless communication, channel measurement, optimization, signal processing, and estimation, as well as programming, is advantageous. Previous experience with communication systems, wireless positioning, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML), as well as programming in C/C++, Matlab, or Python, is meritorious.
Personal Attributes
Fluent written and spoken communication in English is a requirement. Personal qualities such as teamwork, initiative, and suitability for doctoral studies will be weighed together with formal subject knowledge. A brief description of the applicant's visions and goals should be included in the application.
Procedure

Employment and Start Date
The PhD position corresponds to an employment equivalent to four years of full-time studies and is expected to lead to a doctoral degree. Start date by agreement.
The first year of the doctoral education will be conducted at NUST in Pakistan according to the applicable scholarship conditions. Years 2-4 will be conducted at MIUN where the PhD candidate will be employed. Start date by agreement, preferably during the autumn semester of 2025.
A new appointment as a PhD candidate is valid for a maximum of one year, and the appointment may then be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. Regulations regarding employment as a PhD candidate can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), Chapter 5, Sections 1-7.

Salary
Compensation is provided in accordance with Mid Sweden University's salary scale for PhD candidates during their stay in Sweden and in accordance with NUST's scholarship conditions during their stay in Pakistan.
