Summer Job in Cryogenics at ESS
The European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden is a partnership of 13 European countries with the mission to design, construct and operate the world’s most powerful neutron source.
Working with us means being part of a challenging and exciting work environment, at a stunning, brand new workplace filled with innovative minds and brilliant people from across the globe.
About the position
We are now looking to appoint a summer worker for the Cryogenics group in the Accelerator Division.
The Cryogenics Group works alongside other groups in the Accelerator Division to define, design, install, commission and finally operate and maintain the cryogenic systems of the ESS. These efforts extend also to cryogenic needs in the Target Division and the Science Directorate.
The ESS cryogenic systems are currently in commissioning phase. Performance tests are being conducted on key components, including circulation hydrogen pump, heat exchanger, expansion turbine, catalyst, control valve, flow meter, as well as overall system performance tests. These tests aim to verify the cryogenic system design and to optimize operational conditions, leading to the establishment of an automatic control system. Additionally, ESS has developed a high-accuracy Raman optical system to measure the parahydrogen fraction at 17 K.
Throughout the commissioning period, a large amount of experimental data is being collected. Prompt data analysis is crucial to efficiently acquire test data and ensure the commissioning is completed on schedule.
To support this effort, we are seeking a summer worker to assist with data analysis.
About you
A suitable background for this position would be:
- Experience with programming (C, Java, Python etc.), which will be used to analyze the data.
- Experience in data analysis, particularly in the following fields: Thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, heat transfer and Raman spectroscopy.
- Good written and oral communication skills in English.
- Minimum age 18 years.
Furthermore, it would be great if you have:
- Knowledge of 3D model drawing for CFD analysis (FLUENT).
- Knowledge of CFD analysis.
We believe that you enjoy communicating and collaborating with a variety of people in an international environment. You are good at taking initiative and not afraid to ask questions.
Duration and location
This is a summer work position of 6-8 weeks or per agreement.
Planned start date is in June, 2025 – exact starting date to be agreed upon with the final candidate.
Your workplace is on-site at ESS in Lund, Sweden.
