The Department of Earth Sciences currently has about 70 employees working in the fields of physical geography, ecosystem science, and geology. We have specializations in regional climate, polar climate, paleoclimate, urban climate, alpine and polar ecology, GIS and remote sensing, hydrogeology, geophysics, Quaternary geology, and microgeochemistry. The department is well-equipped with laboratories, including a drone lab, GIS teaching lab, an ice lab, and a biogeochemical analysis lab. Job Responsibilities
The main task as an assistant university lecturer is research (up to 80%) and some teaching (up to 20%). Responsibilities include writing scientific articles, applying for external funding, and participating in scientific meetings. The tasks may include supervising undergraduate and master's students' theses, as well as supervising doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers. Teaching is conducted at the undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels. The successful candidate will also work with certain administrative tasks at the department or faculty level.
Eligibility
Eligible for employment as an assistant university lecturer is someone who has obtained a doctoral degree in physical geography, computer science, or another related scientific or mathematical field or has equivalent scientific competence.
Assessment Criteria
You are expected to have expertise and conduct research in advanced analysis of geodata and environmental data with a strong focus on remote sensing and also a focus on statistical analysis to understand the state and dynamics of the environment at different geographical scales. Furthermore, you are expected to have knowledge of theory and analysis of remote sensing data, good programming skills (e.g., Python and/or R), experience with geographic information systems (GIS), and a solid background in statistics, including machine learning.
Scientific excellence should be documented in the form of scientific publications and participation in scientific conferences. You should be interested in conducting research at the infrastructures supported by the BECC research program and are expected to participate in BECC meetings and research projects.
The scientific and pedagogical qualifications should be adequate in relation to the subject matter and job description of the advertised position. Special emphasis is placed on scientific competence and skill. The assessment criteria collaboration with the surrounding community as well as leadership ability and administrative skill are meritorious.

Fluency in English (spoken and written) is essential.

It is desirable that you have research interests that align with the strategic research interests of the department, faculty, and the BECC program. For this purpose, a brief written account of how your planned research can be beneficial and integrated with the department's research should be included in the application.

Employment type: Fixed-term merit-based position for 6 years as an assistant lecturer. After evaluation, promotion to university lecturer with a permanent position may occur.
