Researcher in AI and Human-Robot Interaction

Workplace Description

The position is located in the group for AI and Human-Robot Interaction (Associate Professor Elin A. Topp) within the Department of Robotics and Semantic Systems (RSS), which is part of the Department of Computer Science at Lund University.

The position is funded through a WASP and Aalto University Collaborative Postdoctoral Fellow project. The project combines AI-based methods with appropriate interface technologies including virtual and augmented reality to support situational awareness in shared autonomy, primarily concerning autonomous vehicles.

Job Responsibilities

The main responsibilities as a researcher include conducting research, but also supervising (as co-supervisor) PhD students, project assistants, and thesis work may be included.

Given that the project on which the position is based is an international collaboration project, travel may occur, e.g., for coordination meetings and possibly longer visits to our project partners at Aalto University.

The job responsibilities also include:

  • Research and development of software in the AISA project (AI-powered situational awareness for man-machine interaction in shared autonomy)
  • Supervision of thesis students if the work is closely related to the project
  • Co-supervision / collaboration with PhD students working on similar projects

Qualifications

Eligible for employment as a researcher is one who has obtained a doctoral degree.

Requirements for the position are:

  • PhD in computer science or a related field
  • At least two years of postdoctoral experience in similar projects
  • Excellent knowledge of English, both spoken and written
  • Documented (e.g., through scientific publications) experience working with simulation and visualization software and tools such as Unity and CARLA
  • Documented experience working with ROS and/or ROS2
  • Documented experience evaluating software tools through smaller user studies and experiments

Meritorious for the position are:

  • Previous (documented) experience with simulation and visualization systems for managing conflict situations in traffic (during autonomous driving) and take-over requests within the AISA project
  • Documented experience with similar projects, such as RoboBoatAssist
  • Publications / participation in conferences such as IEEE IV and ACM/IEEE HRI.

Other

The employment is limited from 2025-04-11 to 2026-02-28 and concerns a scope of 15%. The position is not a teaching position and is covered by the Flexitime Agreement for T/A staff.
