PhD Position in Nursing Science
The university's vision is to be the first choice for everyone who wants to make a difference.
The University of Gävle is Sweden's most popular university. We offer around 60 educational programs and 330 independent courses in the humanities, health and medicine, social and natural sciences, and technology. We have 19,000 students, 750 employees, and a unified campus in beautiful surroundings.
The Department of Nursing Science offers education at the undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels and works to strengthen both research in nursing science and interdisciplinary collaboration.
The Department of Nursing Science hereby announces a PhD position (240 credits) for the project “How can a health-promoting work life be achieved for employees with ADHD or autism in people-oriented professions?” with a doctoral degree in nursing science as the final goal.
Job Responsibilities
The selected candidate will primarily engage in conducting scientific projects and completing courses totaling at least 60 credits during the four years of full-time study. The education also includes writing a scientific compilation thesis corresponding to 180 credits. The candidate may also work with teaching and administrative tasks amounting to a maximum of 20% of full-time. Such service will extend the duration of the education accordingly. The selected candidate is expected to perform most of their work in Gävle, the place of employment, and regularly participate in academic activities such as seminars and meetings; some remote work can be discussed.
The overarching purpose of the doctoral project is to investigate how a health-promoting work life can be achieved for employees with ADHD or autism in people-oriented professions by studying their own, first-line managers', and colleagues' perspectives. The project will involve various research methods and result in guidelines for workplaces in people-oriented professions. The doctoral candidate will be admitted to the doctoral education subject of Nursing Science and the area of qualification Health-Promoting Work Life. The doctoral candidate will be part of an interdisciplinary research environment alongside doctoral students from Nursing Science, Occupational Health Science, and Social Work.
The main supervisor for the project is Malin Jordal.
Qualifications
The basic eligibility for doctoral education is met by those who have completed a master's degree or have completed course requirements of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits at the advanced level, or have acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way within or outside the country. The university may grant exceptions to the basic eligibility requirement for an individual applicant if there are special reasons. To be admitted to doctoral education in nursing science, specific eligibility is required, meaning the applicant must have a thesis of at least 15 credits at the advanced level or equivalent knowledge assessed as equivalent. Eligibility must be achieved by the same date as the application deadline. For this position, a degree in health care, social care, or people-oriented professions relevant to the project is required.
The job responsibilities require a well-developed ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team, as well as good communication skills in Swedish and English, both written and spoken. As a doctoral student, you should have a desire to seek new knowledge and also be able to discuss and explain the research to individuals who are not active in the field, both nationally and internationally.
Selection
The selection of candidates for a position will be based on a comprehensive assessment of the applicant's ability to benefit from the education. The selection procedure is based on the following criteria for assessing the applicants:
- formal eligibility to be admitted to doctoral education
- relevance and extent of educational background
- quality of the application
- quality of the applicant's essays, theses, or equivalent
- experience of research-related work, regarding both quantity and content and/or other work experience relevant to the doctoral education
- competence and focus in relation to the specific position
- ability to benefit from doctoral education based on submitted documents, interview, and any work samples/tests
- ability to contribute to the scientific environment where the doctoral education will take place
- references' assessments
However, the mere fact that an applicant is deemed capable of having previous education or work experience credited towards the education does not give the applicant priority over other applicants, HF 7 chap 41 §.
Application
The application for the position must be accompanied by:
- A personal letter explaining the applicant's interest, independence, and suitability for the position
- A CV including work experience, education, and any publications
- Certified documents supporting your basic eligibility
- A list of references
- Certified copies of previous work (e.g., thesis, any scientific publication) and other documents you wish to submit
For applicants with degrees from foreign institutions: An authorized translation into Swedish or English of all documents must be attached unless they are written in Norwegian, Danish, or English. For more information on document requirements, see here (https://hig.se/Ext/En/University-of-Gavle/Research/Doctoral-education.html).
You, as the applicant, are responsible for ensuring that your application is complete according to the advertisement and that it is received by the University by the application deadline.

Start date 250901 or by agreement.
