Your Responsibilities

As a PhD candidate, you will engage in your doctoral education and the research projects you are involved in. Your work may also include teaching or participating in other departmental duties, up to 20% of full-time. The PhD candidate's duties also include actively contributing to the research environment.

Your Qualifications

To be admitted to the doctoral program, the applicant must have both general and specific eligibility as outlined below, and these must be fulfilled by the time the employment decision is made.

General eligibility for doctoral studies is granted to those who have completed a degree at the advanced level or have completed courses totaling at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level or have acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way.

Specific eligibility for admission to the doctoral program in mathematics education is granted to applicants who have at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level relevant to mathematics education.

Particularly meritorious for the position is a subject teacher degree in mathematics and having completed an independent project (thesis) of at least 15 higher education credits at the advanced level relevant to the field of mathematics education research with a focus on grades 7-9 or high school. Good language skills in Swedish are also particularly meritorious for the position.

Furthermore, the applicant must have good language skills in English, both spoken and written.

The applicant will be assessed based on the ability to benefit from the doctoral education, primarily as demonstrated in the attached documents to the application, including the statement of purpose. Selection will consider academic results that demonstrate creativity, the ability for independent judgment and critical analysis, as well as good writing skills. You should be able to work independently and have the ability to take initiative but also possess good collaborative skills. Great emphasis will also be placed on personal qualities and suitability. The most qualified candidates will be invited to take a writing test and called for an interview.

A statement of purpose of a maximum of three A4 pages should be attached to the application. The statement should contain a reflection on the questions the applicant finds interesting and relevant to research.

Your Workplace

The position is located in the Department of Analysis and Didactics (ANDI), which consists of about twenty teachers, researchers, and PhD candidates. Research in mathematics is conducted both within scientific and applied fields across various branches of mathematical analysis as well as mathematics education read more here (https://liu.se/organisation/liu/mai/andi).

As a PhD candidate in mathematics education, you will belong to the Mathematics Education research environment at ANDI. Within mathematics education, learning, teaching, and knowledge formation in and about mathematics are studied. As a scientific field, mathematics education aims to understand and contribute to the further development of mathematics teaching and learning at all educational levels, as well as to investigate the role of mathematics in people's ability to understand and act in an increasingly complex world. This includes examining causal relationships between the mathematics-specific content and how it is communicated in different environments and contexts, as well as how individuals develop, use, and relate to mathematics. The doctoral education in mathematics education conducted at MAI primarily focuses on research relevant to upper secondary school (grades 7-9), high school, and higher education. The doctoral education in mathematics education is part of a newly established graduate school in subject didactics at Linköping University. As a PhD candidate, you will thus be part of a broader subject didactics research context and take certain courses together with PhD candidates from other doctoral programs at Linköping University, in Linköping and Norrköping. About the Position

Upon taking up the position, you will be admitted to the doctoral program. Read more about the respective faculty's doctoral education here.

The position is limited to four years full-time. You will initially be employed for one year, and thereafter the employment will be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time, based on the achieved study plan. Extension of employment up to five years may occur based on the degree of teaching and departmental duties. In special cases, further extension may occur.

Start date in August 2025 or by agreement.
