Research Assistant in Limnology
The Department of Ecology and Genetics is an international environment with staff and students from all over the world.
Our research covers everything from evolutionary ecology and genetics to studies of ecosystems. For more information, see here (http://www.ieg.uu.se).
Project Description
The assistant will work within a project focused on climate-friendly river restoration. Most rivers are heavily impacted by humans. Therefore, river restorations are being carried out in many places to promote water quality and biodiversity. The establishment of wetlands and dam removal are two common measures, both leading to an increased occurrence of macrophytes, i.e., plants in or near water. Macrophytes can emit significant amounts of greenhouse gases, but they can also sequester carbon and thus act as a carbon sink. The CLIMIPHY project aims to create new knowledge about the climate footprint of macrophytes, enabling professionals in river restoration to restore rivers in a way that benefits biodiversity and water quality, with as small a climate footprint as possible.
Responsibilities
Field measurements in established wetlands, processing of samples in the lab, and compilation of measurement data.
Field measurements include inventorying macrophytes, measuring greenhouse gas emissions from macrophytes and open water surfaces, sampling bottom sediments, and measuring water quality. Laboratory work includes measuring the chemical composition of plant samples, sediment samples, and water samples. Data work includes compiling and documenting measurement data, calculations, and geographic placement of measurement results in GIS.
The work is conducted together with a group consisting of several researchers, PhD students, and students.
Qualifications
Master's degree, or a foreign degree assessed to be equivalent to a master's degree, in limnology or similar. Experience in fieldwork in aquatic environments and knowledge of macrophytes. Experience in measuring greenhouse gas emissions in the field and analyzing resulting data. Experience in sampling water and sediment, and subsequent chemical analyses. Experience in analyzing spatial data using GIS. Since the work involves a lot of field measurements, possession of a B driver's license is required.
We place great importance on personal qualities such as the ability to collaborate within a group, independence, and organizational skills. The candidate must have a very good ability to express themselves in English, both orally and in writing.
Meritorious
Knowledge in biogeochemistry in aquatic ecosystems.
