Welcome to Sundsvall Municipality!

Sundsvall Municipality is one of the largest employers in Northern Sweden, with around 8,000 employees and over 300 professions. Together, we fulfill one of society's most important missions – creating utility and value for residents, businesses, and future generations. Regardless of the specific department, we work towards the same goal: to be a great place to live, work, and thrive.

We are currently in an exciting phase of development. We are a driving force in digital development and artificial intelligence, and together we create smart solutions for the people of Sundsvall today and in the future.

We are facing major transitions to meet citizens' needs in the long term – would you like to be part of this journey?

Within the Child and Education Administration, our approximately 3,000 employees meet with around 14,000 children and students at more than 100 preschools and schools across the municipality every day. Every child and student in Sundsvall's preschools and schools should be able to develop, learn, and reach their goals based on their own prerequisites. Every student should leave school with the desire, knowledge, and good conditions to face adult life and the future.

Your new workplace

Västermalm School is part of Sundsvall Gymnasium and will have approximately 1,200 students in the autumn of 2026. The Adapted Upper Secondary School has three national programs and will have just over 50 students in autumn 2026; therefore, we need to expand our work team. The Adapted Upper Secondary School also offers the Individual Program at Västermalm School, where approximately 40 students are enrolled in autumn 2026.

Our common goal within the Adapted Upper Secondary School is to create conditions for each individual student to develop socially and academically as much as possible based on their prerequisites, thereby contributing to the students' independence and opportunities for a rich adult life. Our shared view on learning is that it occurs in social contexts through interaction with others.

How you contribute in the role of Special Educator/Special Pedagogue

You will teach students in the three national programs of the Adapted Upper Secondary School in the common upper secondary subjects and will be part of a work team consisting of three other special educators, six vocational teachers, and several student assistants. Together with the teachers and assistants, you will plan, implement, follow up, and evaluate the teaching.

Scheduling together with the work team is part of the assignment. Systematically mapping and developing identified areas for development at the individual, group, and organizational levels, together with the work team and school management, is included. Collaborating and cooperating with all colleagues within the programs for the benefit of the students, as well as coordinating with the Adapted Upper Secondary School's Individual Program, other national programs at Västermalm, the Adapted Comprehensive School, and external actors, is an important part of the work.

Your qualifications and experience

We are looking for you who are a qualified special educator with a focus on intellectual disability or a special pedagogue with a teaching background who has experience with students in adapted school forms.

  • You have the student in focus and work from the premise that diversity is the norm.
  • You have knowledge and experience regarding intellectual disability at various levels as well as Neurodevelopmental Disorders (NDD/ASD).
  • You have knowledge and experience of working systematically with clarifying pedagogy, visual supports, and alternative communication.
  • You are engaged, have a low-affective approach, and possess the ability and willingness to develop people. You can apply different pedagogical methods based on each student's needs.
  • You are always solution-focused, creative, innovative, well-structured, and have the ability to inspire others.
  • Collaboration skills and a willingness to share knowledge and experiences are highly valued traits.
  • The ability to see different perspectives and view the work team as a supportive and developing team, where high expectations of both colleagues and students, and student participation, are a natural part of daily work.
  • You handle rapid changes well, are flexible, and adapt to current conditions.

We place great emphasis on personal suitability!
