The Department of Surgical Sciences (IKV) belongs to the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy at Uppsala University and has approximately 160 employees and around 230 registered doctoral students, the majority of whom are clinically active physicians and nurses. The department conducts research and teaching at undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels. The research is carried out in research groups organized primarily around surgical specialties and related medical disciplines. Teaching takes place, among other things, within the medical, nursing, radiography, and specialist nursing programs. The department also hosts several research infrastructures.
PET (Positron Emission Tomography) is a medical imaging technique that uses molecules labeled with radioactive isotopes, so-called tracers. PET is a quantitative technique, meaning that one can not only image the distribution of the tracer in the body but also measure absolute concentrations. By measuring concentration changes over time, biological processes such as blood flow, glucose consumption, and receptor availability can be measured using tracer kinetics. PET is a multidisciplinary activity located both at Uppsala University Hospital (PET Centre and the Department of Nuclear Medicine) and at Uppsala University (preclinical PET platform). Physicians, chemists, physicists, radiographers, and biomedical analysts work together to perform clinical imaging diagnostics and clinical research studies, as well as to develop new tracers and methods to study various processes in the body and improve imaging diagnostics. Within the research group for Molecular Imaging Physics, we primarily work on method development for quantitative PET in both diagnostics and research.
