Doctoral Student in Meteorology

Do you want to work with the atmospheric boundary layer, supported by competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Do you want an employer that invests in sustainable employment and offers secure, advantageous working conditions? We welcome your application for a doctoral position at Uppsala University.

The Department of Earth Sciences is Sweden's most comprehensive academic environment for research and education in earth sciences. Here, broad expertise contributes to solutions for important societal issues. The Earth is a dynamic planet that is constantly changing. To understand how our planet works, our researchers seek answers in the field, through laboratory experiments, and through advanced modeling. Our research and education cover a wide range of areas; rocks and minerals, weather and climate, the evolution of life, natural disasters, wind power and energy, environmental and water technology, and sustainable development. Our research combines natural sciences and engineering with social sciences and is often interdisciplinary.

Over 300 people from more than 30 countries work at the department, both in Uppsala and on Gotland Campus.

Our six research divisions:

  • Geophysics
  • Air, Water, and Landscape Science
  • Mineralogy, Petrology, and Tectonics
  • Natural Resources and Sustainable Development
  • Paleobiology
  • Wind Energy

The project is a collaboration between Uppsala University and the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI). At Uppsala University, the meteorology group is part of the Division of Air, Water, and Landscape Science. We have conducted research on the atmospheric boundary layer for many years. This is done through micrometeorological field measurements and advanced atmospheric models.

Responsibilities

The position is part of a larger project focused on understanding how weather affects radar wave propagation over the Baltic Sea and its coastal zones. The studies involve processing existing data and collecting new measurement data in the coastal zone to understand the impact, primarily from atmospheric gradients of moisture and temperature, on radar wave propagation, with a main focus on so-called ducting layers. Complementary oceanographic measurements of sea waves and water temperature, as well as high-frequency turbulence measurements in the atmosphere, will also be used to evaluate the description of near-surface layers in coupled atmospheric models that affect radar wave propagation. The tasks include collecting meteorological measurements using existing systems for moisture gradient measurements at the Östergarnsholm measurement station and using new technology such as UAVs, as well as modeling relevant meteorological coastal processes and phenomena.

Qualifications

Eligibility for doctoral studies requires that you have:

  • completed an advanced level degree in natural sciences with a focus on meteorology or equivalent. Other technical or natural science degrees may also be considered, especially within oceanography.
  • completed at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 credits at advanced level, including an independent project of at least 15 higher education credits, or acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way.

Knowledge in mathematics and physics, as well as basic computer skills, are also required.

Regulations for doctoral students can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, Sections 1-7, as well as in the university's rules and guidelines.
