SLU, Department of Aquatic Resources, Coastal Laboratory, is looking for a biologist or a person with a corresponding background and qualifications for a position as an Environmental Analyst at the office in Simpevarp, Oskarshamn Municipality.

The Department of Aquatic Resources conducts environmental analysis, advisory services, research, and education in aquatic ecology with a focus on fish and shellfish. The department is SLU's largest and has employees at four main locations: Lysekil, Öregrund, Uppsala (Ultuna), and Stockholm (Drottningholm), as well as two field stations.
Our operations are strongly profiled towards data collection and analysis of fish, fisheries, and ecosystems. The department is characterized by intensive collaboration with the surrounding society. About the Job
We are looking for an engaged and knowledgeable biologist for the position of Environmental Analyst at SLU Aqua, Coastal Laboratory. You will contribute to our work in providing advice to authorities and developing knowledge about the sustainable use of ecosystems in coastal and marine areas. You will work with field sampling and analysis within the framework of the EU Data Collection Regulation as well as national and regional environmental monitoring of fish in coastal waters.
You will primarily work with the biological and radiological environmental monitoring at the Oskarshamn Nuclear Power Plant, the EU Data Collection Regulation, and data collection within national and regional environmental monitoring. Additionally, you may work on various environmental analysis projects at the department.
The duties include conducting test fishing along the coast (primarily the east coast but also in other parts of Sweden if needed) and other field assignments, as well as collecting various types of data through sampling programs on board commercial fishing vessels as well as research vessels of various sizes. This also involves biological sampling of fish and analysis of biological samples, reporting results, and other tasks within the scope of SLU Aqua's operations. The duties sometimes involve field work, which entails flexible working hours, travel, and possibly some work on weekends. The duties may change over time according to the needs of the operations.
Your Background
You have a strong interest in the marine environment, fish, and fisheries. As a person, you are responsible and good at communicating. You enjoy working in a group but are also comfortable working independently if required. You need to be meticulous, quick to learn new things, accustomed to working systematically, and have a flexible approach. In the employment, great importance is placed on personal qualities such as teamwork, meticulousness, and subject-matter proficiency, which should be exemplified in the application.
You must have:
- a solid interest in marine biology, fish, fisheries, and the Baltic Sea ecosystem
- good seamanship
- good experience with field work
- experience with test fishing, preferably with trawl nets and/or fyke nets
- driver's license for car (manual transmission)
- good oral and written skills in Swedish
- good oral and written skills in English
It is meritorious if you have:
- good knowledge of Baltic Sea fish species
- experience operating stern-trawl vessels
- experience with biological sampling of fish
- experience working with databases
- project management experience
- experience from commercial fishing or work on research vessels
- certified as Master Mariner Class VIII
- driver's license with B96 or BE category
- current sea safety training to work on board fishing boats
- current education in animal ethics
- experience in biological statistics and statistical programs (R, SPSS, etc.)
- experience writing scientific texts or reports
Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in biology or a corresponding subject.
Location: Simpevarp, Oskarshamn Municipality.
Employment Type: Fixed-term contract until 2027-08-31 with the possibility of extension.
